Will the Ohio Gov. sign and become a political dead man?

http://www.newsnet5.com/news/5580743/detail.html

Bill Would Allow Arrests For No Reason In Public Place
Citizens Would Also Have To Show ID

A bill on Gov. Bob Taft's desk right now is drawing a lot of criticism, NewsChannel5 reported.

One state representative said it resembles Gestapo-style tactics of government, and there could be changes coming on the streets of Ohio's small towns and big cities.

The Ohio Patriot Act has made it to the Taft's desk, and with the stroke of a pen, it would most likely become the toughest terrorism bill in the country. The lengthy piece of legislation would let police arrest people in public places who will not give their names, address and birth dates, even if they are not doing anything wrong.

WEWS reported it would also pave the way for everyone entering critical transportation sites such as, train stations, airports and bus stations to show ID.

-snip-

WEWS was told that Taft is expected to sign the bill into law, but legal experts expect that it will be challenged in courts.

when are Ohioans going to get out the tar and feathers? do they have enough gumption? can they lay off the mood pills until their state is cleaned up?

1. Has there been a lot of terrorism in Ohio?
Because I seem to have missed it.

2. no terrists but a lot of crime in the repug party

yellow crime scene tape should be strung up around the state; or, at least signs up along the road at the state line warning incoming traffic that they were entering a crime zone.

3. You mean he's not already?
I don't live in Ohio, but my understanding is that he's the least popular governor in the US, and people there just can't wait to bounce him out on his ass.

5. I haven't read this legislation, but don't you have to do that already?
Somehow, if I were stopped for some reason (even if I didn't think I was doing anything), and I refused to give my name and ID info, I doubt it would be very well accepted by law enforcement here either. How does this legislation change thngs?

9. The difference with your example is that there is "some reason" that you
were stopped. Apparently this legislation (I haven't read it) would allow the cops to stop you for no reason.

6. Maybe not merely 'politically' dead....
this is the kind of stuff that will drive some citizens to resort to violence. That's what can happen when our Constitution is undermined so blatantly.

7. Even if he signed it, there's no way it would stand up under
judicial scrutiny.

8. Why would he care?
he'll never have a political career in ohio ever again, so i bet he's thinking "fuck it."

a fucking HUGE amount of people, even in rural ohio, hate Taft, and think that our current government is corrupt. I predict a LOT of changeover in 2006

11. No surprises here.
This is just another tidbit of info revealing that Ohio's elected leaders do not stand for the well-being of our state's citizens or even care about their constituency. Our elected officials (GOP majority) only care for themselves, their companies, and their bank accounts. Why do we vote these idiots into office?

13. He already is a political dead man
Edited on Sun Dec-25-05 01:58 AM by Lady President
"when are Ohioans going to get out the tar and feathers? do they have enough gumption? can they lay off the mood pills until their state is cleaned up?" My favorite type of posts-- the random post bashing Ohio from someone who clearly knows nothing about our state's politics. They never get old... Taft can't run again due to term limits, as anyone with a tad of knowledge regarding Ohio politics knows. In other words, he is already a political dead man, and probably feels he should make a big splash before he goes.

Also, this story is not common knowledge here. The major papers and television stations are ignoring it. Everyone is explaining the story via blogs and message boards. It's tough to get news out by traditional methods this time of year, much less through the internet and word of mouth. Of course, we're all really tired from our "mood pills." :eyes:

18. It's actually worse
If his goal was to be handed a cushy lobbyist or agency position, I could deal with it.

His plan is to teach. He would like to political science or economics at the college level. That is wrong on so many levels... :(
