1. The spying has nothing to do with online forums.
Hell, they could have looked at DU any time they wanted. Why should this latest domestic spying issue make any difference to posting here?

17. EXACTLY!!
And, they don't care about people ranting and raving to each other - we're "preaching to the choir" here.

2. I only hope agents are paid to read in here so that more people
who are either high, or are in high places can read a little bit about reality and not the fantasy land that has been shoved down their throats by fascists and criminals. I am sure agent Mike now knows more than he cares to and his entire take on all this has gone 180. Don't think so? Remember the polls, the judge who just bailed, and the moderate repugs who have jumped ship.

5. (Sigh) Honestly
Yes. I'll be the first to admit that I have been a bit anxious about this whole snooping business. I hate myself for feeling that twinge but I'm NOT that heroic person that says Damn all. I'm not a heavy poster as my post count will no doubt indicate despite being here for a while now. Have I slacken my visits here? No. Has it slowed or prevented my lackadaisical pace of posting? Not really - although I've finished ranting replies to some threads but deleted them in preview...

Ah, well. It is what it is.

7. It's not illegal to have an opinion
It is illegal for my government to spy on me with no probable cause other than the fact that I disagree with their politics.

Watergate was Repukes spying on Dems on a small scale.

Spygate is Repukes spying on an entire NATION of Democrats and Progressives. They truly want Nazi Germany to be recreated right here and now in the good ol US.

We fought Hitler only to become Hitler?

We supported Saddam, then fought Saddam only to become him?

Republicans are stark raving lunatics. I don't fear them. I pity them.

8. the concern is not, I think, whether federal agents troll here . . .
But whether they pick targets from here.

On the whole, it's probably a good thing for these guys to be visiting. Despite the sound and fury (and snarkiness and backbiting), DU is a highly patriotic place: The vast majority of posters express a fervent desire to make our country better and an adherence to core American values.

Now as it turns out, to reach those goals a lot of us think Der Chimpenfuhrer needs to be run out of town on a rail (and then taken in irons to the Hague to share a cell with Slobodan Milosovic).

But only really stupid agents would consider such sentiments a threat. Any estimates on the percentage of such agents who are "really stupid?" I haven't a clue.

However, there are almost certainly some, and perhaps a larger number who are so blinded by their sense of mission (or whatever) that they couldn't resist the urge to "track down" some of the posters here and "find out a little bit more about them."

That's how I interpret "EVIL spying on DU."

9. I don't think they're spying on DU
I mean, let's think about this logically, they've got more important situations to spy on than this forum.

12. I don't think that there are literally agents reading DU
But I do suspect that something like Carnivore or Echelon *COULD* be used to monitor activity or key words. They say those apps were pulled because of public outcry but what about similar apps? Heck! The President was just on this week admitting to illegally wiretapping people! I remember that guy that Michael Moore interviewed in his movie F9/11 that was speaking his own opinion at a gym and got harassed by the FBI.

14. Well yes, I agree with you on that...Echelon in particular
I saw a thread last night, it was a partial list of key words that activate Echelon...and you know I use about a quarter of those words on the phone :scared:

That scene in F9/11 was pretty scary...I mean, whatever happened to Freedom of Speech?...Oh wait a minute...we know what happened to Freedom of Speech don't we *slaps forehead*

You don't scare me...now or ever.

By the way, I hope you have been enjoying the conversations with my Aussie pal. Especially
when the subject of Herr Bush comes up.

Keep up the good work! Spying on America's own citizens must be a very rewarding career. :patriot:
