Drudge: Kerry Borrows $6.4 Million Against His House to Finance Campaign
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 09:50 PM by DoveTurnedHawk
No other link or text yet.

I am of two minds on this. First, I think Kerry is in this for keeps, and might continue on past NH, even if he comes in second or third. Second, I think his quarterly fundraising numbers will likely be quite anemic.

Not sure whether this news helps him or hurts him. It will show him as determined and willing to put his money where his mouth is. But it will also raise questions about his level of support.

RW Source Disclaimer: Drudge is a no-talent hack, but he does have decent leads and advance info at times.

2. It will only prolong
the inevitable. But it puts more pressure on the other candidates too (Clark, Lieberman, Ghephardt). Maybe he can knock Dean down a notch before it runs out.

30. Better his money than the matching taxpayer funds..
I'm glad he's doing it. He's dedicated enough to tap his personal wealth. I consider it $ that die hard supporters would give if they could, like myself.

31. remember when CFR was a good thing? We were all rooting for Granny D
and people even liked McCain for it. We went through the agony of hastert taking the bill off the floor. We called reps to get enough signatures ti get the bill back - took all summer of 2001. We cheered when it passed. W moped. remember all that?

Then give them to Kerry, who can mortgage them, and raise billions of dollars!

Now that's campaign fincance reform!

As you can see there are two here already that will make that impossible.

20. I don't see much positive about this...
I guess you could say he's willing to put his money where his mouth is.

But it also reflects badly on his support.

11. Kerry is pumping morphine into a dying man
It's nice to know he has the personal resources to raise 6 and a half million bucks for his campaign, but this has all the characteristics of a deathbed watch.

12. If you can borrow that much

Kerry is NOT part of the problem, guy. Being rich does not necessarily mean sheltered superiority.

26. Kerry wife's only job is to give her money away. She spends countless
hours giving as much as possible.

As far as Kerry not being able to relate to what it takes to make it through a difficult situation, I think you need some perspective. When men his age were getting champagne unit assignments to avoid combat, Kerry was putting his ass on the line, same as everybody else. When his men were in danger he charged "AT" the men who were firing on his men. money or no he put his ass on the line for his fellow Americans and has helped as many as is possible, personally, ever since. It is George who can't eat a pretzel and watch football. Let's keep this all in perspective.

24. These are not the days of Abe Lincoln. One does not have to be
born in a log cabin to become president. Kerry has a long and distinquised record on social issues.

27. He worked in college, his kids work,
Yes, you can understand. In fact, I think he understands the extent "good fortune" can play in ones life a hell of alot more than some of those who think they "earned it all on their own." Everybody gets help along the way, that's a premise of the Democratic Party, and one that every candidate this year understands fully. Well, almost every candidate. I expect the one who said "they wouldn't be on welfare if they had any dignity" doesn't get it at all.

19. Kerry is polling behind Sharpton on a nationwide poll (NBC News)
NBC News did a profile of John Kerry's campaign tonight. While the report portrayed Kerry as being energized in Iowa, it also mentioned that Kerry is polling behind Sharpton on a nationwide poll.

I am really convinced that Wes Clark will finish second in NH. Clark makes Kerry's campaign irrelevant and unnecessary.

22. How did he spend the $20 million he raised,
much of it from fat cats? Is this just good money going after bad?

IMHO, he brought this on himself. His people came to our state and only wanted to talk to the delegates to our national convention(the party officers and the national committeewo/men), not the rank and file. He showed himself up as an elitist who wanted to sew up the delegates early before we had a chance to have our say-so in our early primary. Many in our state think he should go fly a kite.

I think he would make an ADEQUATE President, but we can do better. And if he doesn't get grass roots support, he should give it up and not try to self-finance.

34. New Mexico
No event, it was months ago. The Kerry people just snuck in and tried to round up the votes of all the party leaders, wanting them to commit to him way too early, before anyone had a chance to look at all the candidates. Also contacted the national committee reps from the state. Reported to me by the State Dem chair, and the Grant County chair, both of whom were very angry: they asked his people if they wanted to address meetings of the different counties or precincts. They said no. Kerry people didn't bother to speak at our state convention, either. Only Dean and Kucinich people requested time and had speakers.

And people wonder why Kerry comes off as elitist, only contacting the movers-and-shakers.

32. this is not a good sign
This is throwing good money after bad. For whatever reason people are not responding to him and he should just face facts. Instead of staying in to be the anti-Dean he should think of the people and the party for once and ignore his own ambitions.
