Ben Stein: "Bush will go down in history as a great peacemaker"
http://mediamatters.org/items/200512160009

Host Neil Cavuto introduced the panel discussion by asking, "So, given the positive turnout in Iraq, will it be a positive for our U.S. markets and will it help finally take the Dow back above 11,000?" He added, "We didn't quite see it today, but it's sort of like Waiting for Godot. Eventually it will happen." In the play, Godot never actually shows up, though given that the Dow is currently at 10,878.16 -- and closed at 10,883.51 the day before the elections -- "eventually" could come very soon.

From the December 15 edition of Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto:

CAVUTO: So, given the positive turnout in Iraq, will it be a positive for our U.S. markets and will it help to finally take the Dow back above 11,000? We didn't quite see it today, but it's sort of like waiting for Godot. Eventually it'll happen.

...

CAVUTO: Ben Stein, Ben Stein? What say you?

STEIN: I think it's an incredible plus for Mr. Bush. I think Mr. Bush is going to go down in history as one of the great peacemakers and democracy-builders in the history of the world. I think his reputation is going to grow by leaps and bounds after this. I think it's good for the market in the short run, although the market didn't do much about it today, as we know. But let's say it saves us 100 or $200 billion over the next couple of years as troop withdrawals start. That's a small amount in the context of the budget. This market -- the budget and the GDP -- this market is looking for an end to the Fed march towards higher interest rates, and that's got to happen. This just makes no sense for the Fed to keep raising interest rates. And it's looking for a continued drumbeat of higher corporate earnings, and those I think we're going to see. Dow 11,000, it seems to me, is virtually a certainty barring a new terrorist attack, but alas, the election and democracy didn't make it happen.

14. Sorry, but I dislike that flick intensely.
I particularly disliked Ferris' gawky pal.

And the whole situation... bunch of spoiled rich kids, just screwing off.

Bleccchh.

38. Disagree with you there too.
Cameron did not intentionally destroy the car. It was an accident, directly resulting from their screwing around. I don't think there was a point there to be missed.

22. Hmm, I'm afraid you missed the point.
Although Bueller's name is in the title, it's really Cameron's movie. I've watched it many times and I am impressed with how subtle the story actually is, behind the hijinks. Try it again?

27. Along w/Fast Times at Ridgemont High
this movie can be called a "Teen Classic" as far as I'm concerned.

Charlie Sheen had a nice little role, too. 1986 was a good year for movies.

Boy, do we digress.

Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 02:28 PM by speedoo
Ferris Buehler was a total waste of time for me.

Ridgemont High was indeed a teen classic. Funny, but with a message. And loaded with future stars. Sean Penn was unbelievable.

On edit: And besides, Ben Stein was NOT in Ridgemont High.

Ask yourself why none of these people talk about the candidates or parties running for election in Iraq. While they bleat that the Iraqis are voting, and they are,it matters who they vote for. Since the 2 dominant Shiite parties in the Iraqi Alliance are Iranian backed, and one,Dawa, was responsible for the Beirut bombing in 1983,and the other SCIRI,was founded by Khomeini, that may explain it.

Frankly I'm not really in a position to judge Stein's comedic ability since I can't take his voice long enough to get to a punchline. Granted, some of Nixon's speeches were pretty funny...you know the ones about getting out of Vietnam and stopping the commies and stuff.

34. Half and half
Yes, I was being sarcastic, but Stein is actually pretty good at deadpan humor. His writing is quite lively, as well, the opposite of his public persona. AFAIK, he was not the major Nixon speechwriter, and most of Nixon's speeches were pretty wooden and adjective-heavy.

Of course, Stein's gone back to being a flat-out tool after a long period of semi-independence in spite of being a Republican. But the brain is a tender thing. Let's hope it doesn't take too much chemo or surgery to correct that. :)

25. That Man is Crazy
That man is crazier than I thought he was. This is the same guy, although he did not support Schwarzenegger, supported the recall of Gray Davis. Someone tell me where Bush has made peace in the world. Even Tom Brokaw at one point displayed the differences between the Clinton Presidency during 2000 and the hope we had in going into the new millennium and how that hope had been dashed after Bush got into office. Brokaw even asked if we could sue for breach of contract.

At the end of one of his broadcasts on the Nightly news Brokaw pointed out that in 2000 there was peace around the world and the economy was doing well. He went on to say that many people looked forward to the new millennium as a time of peace and prosperity. Then came 2001 and all that changed we were now at war and the economy had tanked and was trying to recover. Finally, Brokaw asked "Can we sue for breach of contract".

It is Clinton who will go down as a peace president. He was the one who at least tried to bring about peace in many places around the world. It was Clinton who tried to make the world a better place.

with our own blood & treasure, you hear very little from the likes of benjamin netanyahu, the way he did after 9-11, trying to justify our vengeance from afar while juxtaposing per capita jewish deaths to american deaths (always an eye for an eye ratio somewhere abouts) vis-a-vis terrorist attacks...frum & stein are clearly semanticists, further justifying that continued effort imo talking up their one boy that would step off the end of a pier if only because he thinks he is right
