Congressmen take act on the road
The Associated PressWASHINGTON — He may be a politician, but Rep. Kenny Hulshof of Missouri is also a little bit country and a little bit rock ’n’ roll.
Hulshof, a Republican, and his all-congressional band, the Second Amendments, will perform for U.S. troops over the holidays during a trip to the Middle East and Europe.
The bipartisan country-rock band features a bevy of powerful House members: Hulshof on drums; Rep. Collin Peterson, a Minnesota Democrat, on guitar and lead vocals; Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, a Michigan Republican, on lead guitar; Rep. Dave Weldon, a Florida Republican, on bass; and Rep. Jon Porter, a Nevada Republican, on keyboards.
While the name sounds political — the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms — it is actually the second incarnation of an earlier band that Peterson formed a few years ago, called The Amendments.
“It’s always nice to have a double meaning,” Peterson said Thursday. “We are all in favor of the Second Amendment.”
The five-city tour is part of an official congressional fact-finding trip between Christmas and New Year’s Eve that will take the band to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Sweat poured down U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson’s face as he led a five-man congressional band performing its biggest music gig yet, in front of thousands at WE Fest.
“I’m the only Democrat up here with four Republicans,” the Detroit Lakes resident said about the sweat after a short set that included rock and country tunes such as “The Girls Get Prettier at Closing Time” and “It’s Only Make Believe.”
