RAW STORY

The Democratic National Committee today opened fire on Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) for her attacks on Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), the House Democrat and ex-marine who called for the beginning of an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, RAW STORY has learned.

During a Congressional debate on the Iraq War, Schmidt called Murtha a coward. She was also later found to have made up remarks purportedly told to her by a Marine in her district.

The ads, including a 10-by-20 foot mobile billboard, full-page ads in 10 newspapers throughout Schmidt's district, and online ads, were unveiled this morning in Cincinatti.

1. Love the picture
The only things missing are the nose wart and the flying monkeys.

Imagine: A Democratic attack ad. 'Bout time.

2. I'm glad, but the ad is WEAK.

It explains nothing about what she did. Just "Shame on You."

9. I'm certain many do not.
I asked some people at work and they had no clue. Maybe people in OH know more.

At least it may prompt the "What did she do?" questions....

26. Agree
I bet no more than 15 out of a hundred Americans know who the fuck Jean Schmidt is, or why the Democrats might have a beef with her. Of course if this is running only in Ohio (or PA), the percentage would be much higher.

35. Absolutely
I know it's hard for us here in the political trenches to realize that close to half of people in this country pay not one seconds attention to anything going on in this country and certainly in the political mud pits.

Anybody who bothers with politics knows exactly what the ad is referring to! Especially the locals.

5. Who is the savage, the person who called a veteran a coward or...
those who protest the call?

Democrats are not "savage" to this person she deserves it.

Calling someone out for their unconscionably dishonest and unethical behavior is not "savaging" them.

7. You know something.
I just don't see the point of this now.
Yes, Schmidt was wrong and we all spoke
out afterward.

Now it looks like a desperate attempt to
find something to attack instead of sticking
to positive issues and the problems caused
by BushInc.

8. I agree
-- the Democrats shouldn't be playing only this card against Schmidt (or one card against any GOoPer) -- attack the package, be relentless. We've already won this battle against her, keep the war going.

It makes us look like we're grasping at straws when there's so much more we can use to take her and her ilk down.

Jim

15. Yeah, but if you just stick to postive issues you run the risk
of being the Democrats for the last 15 years.

Why is telling the truth and taking it to her home district a bad thing? Are you worried the Republicans will be mad at us?

The point of this is that you don't go on the floor of the House and accuse a decorated career Marine of cowardess without paying a price.

18. "Why is telling the truth...a bad thing?"
That's what I keep wondering. We're telling the TRUTH, not just attacking people for no reason. We are standing up for what's right, fighting back! And it's about f*cking time, too, IMO...

19. It's called sending a message her partners in crime will hear
If we hold her PERSONALLY accountable for what she did EVERYBODY in the House, Senate, Governors and Legislatures will get the message loud and clear. If you diffuse the message to just Repugs then the uninformed will say both sides do it. Getting thousands of phone calls to her offices will make it loud and clear how people feel and the word will leak to the rest of the Republican and Democratic partys. It might even get through to the DLC.:banghead:

32. I completely disagree
They need their bullshit thrown back in their faces more often. Nothing desperate about it. Instead, it keeps her insanity front and center in her district. She's up for re-election in less than a year. Anything stupid she does from here on needs to be put right where everyone can see it.

Fuck her. I hope they turn her into a punchline.

10. Jean Schmidt deserves a LOT of attention for this obnoxious attack
on someone working for the only right cause in this vile Republican catastrophe.

If there are some who don't know about, why not awaken them so they by god LEARN about it? No reason to encourage them to remain ignorant.

14. Vulnerable House Seat In 2006
And her seat is vulnerable in 2006. I see no problem for holding politicians accountable for their behavior. She also attacked Hackett, another veteran, for his "disloyalty" during her recent campaign.

29. vulnerability...
Wish you were right, but rethug voters in CD-2 far outnumber Dems. In the June
party primaries, the second-place rethug candidate outpolled Hackett by a few
thousand votes. These are from memory but it was something like:
Schmidt(R) -11500, McEwen(R) -10800, Hackett(D) - 7300. These are the
rough totals in the party primaries.

Rumors after the Aug special election suggested that some of Hackett's support
in his near-win came from disaffected R's who hate Schmidt and who would have
given McEwen a much bigger win than Schmidt's 4% margin. Who will ever know?
I expect Bob McEwen will run against her in a rethug primary in May...and win.

It's a shame that Ohio Dems have to choose between two strong candidates in
May - Brown and Hackett - to run against DeWine. Dilutes the war chest, y'know?

31. That's the idea
Especially since W is still behind the 45% approval line, and the Republicans in Congress well below.

Personally, I thought the ad didn't have an answer but to call her (which she/her staff could explain her position by backtracking), but that was the DNC decision...I didn't give anything toward this project. However, I imagine some vets will get riled. And they should.
