Legislation is moving in the Senate to create a new government agency to combat bioterrorism that will operate, unlike any other agency before it, under blanket secrecy protection.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) has introduced the Biodefense and Pandemic Vaccine and Drug Development Act of 2005, S1873, that would create a new agency in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to research and develop strategies to combat bioterrorism and natural diseases. While Congress has created several agencies recently in response to homeland security concerns, most notably the Department of Homeland Security, Burr proposes for the first time ever to completely exempt this new agency from all open government laws. The legislation has already passed out of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and is now before the full Senate.

Mark Tapscott at the Heritage Foundation writes that "BARDA will essentially be accountable to nobody and can operate without having to worry about troublesome interference from courts or private citizens like you and me."

This move to restrict the reach of FOIA appears in stark contrast to the recent Senate vote to strengthen open government. Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) co-sponsored FOIA reform legislation, passed by the Senate in June, that "will bring additional sunshine to the federal legislative process, and was another step toward strengthening the Freedom of Information Act."

This agency is VERY bad news.

They've been setting us up with this bird flu/health emergency/martial law thing since 9/11 and particularly since Katrina! How do we STOP this?

Once this is in place, what's to stop the Bushies from letting loose a bug (odorless, invisible, so it's great to scare people with - oh, it's there, you just can't seeit!) under the guise that it was and then declaring martial law and a state of emergency (i.e., no elections, Bush stays in office)?

I have a recent BUNCH of articles on the Bushie push for martial law and military takeover of American soil so, no, I will not wear the tinfoil hat!

Conspirasy theories and the FEAR of them as a social humiliation game has rendered the public too scared of humuliation to ask controversial questions investigate and share results and be HONEST about what they see happening themmselves for being labeled by those playing make believe in denial as"kooks".What a way to shut down real investigateve thinking and limit a persons spoken honesty about the situation they see.

FEAR of conspirasy theorosts has made people all or nothing, so it has been a great psychological tool of fascists to make any discussion of the subtle and corrupted forces undermining our government taboo.

The interesting part is most illuminati type conspiracy theories take the form of what was said in the protocols, it was the original conspiracy theory, created (I think) by pre soviet russian intelligence. Hitler was in fact a conspiracy theorist.
This is not to deride people who are labelled that today, but rather to emphasize the weight and seriousness of what people brush off because it makes them uncomfortable. Conspiracy theories grow in darkness. The darkness of a cultural separation between jews and anglos in germany, the darkness of the secrecy created by the Bush administration. You've got to shine the light on them or they will flourish in the darkness like mushrooms, and some are will be in fact very deadly.

8. we should have seen this coming. Antrax attacks and bird flu

fake scare. Have you noticed the movies about smallpox plagues and stuff like that.
