Democratic candidate for governor Eliot Spitzer remains the favorite of most New York voters and hit his highest-job approval rating in a poll released Wednesday, while Republicans search for a favorite 11 months from Election Day.
Spitzer led the closest Republican _ Rochester billionaire B. Thomas Golisano _ 60 percent to 22 percent, according to the Quinnipiac University poll. Golisano, however, hasn't decided if he will run as a Republican after three unsuccessful minor-party runs.
Quinnipiac pollster Maurice Carroll cautioned respondents likely relied "totally" on name recognition rather than issues in picking Republicans. Golisano's three previous media-intensive campaigns helped his standing, Carroll said.
Spitzer, the two-term attorney general, led former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld 63 percent to 16 percent; led former state Secretary of State Randy Daniels 62 percent to 15 percent; and led former Assemblyman John Faso 64 percent to 14 percent.
