Wash. Democrats Apologize for Magnet

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The state's Democratic chairman has apologized for a political gimcrack that parodied a popular Christian automobile adornment.

The fish-shaped magnet was posted for sale alongside other political paraphernalia last week on the state Democratic Party's Web site.

The magnet also bore the image of a cross and the word "hypocrite" over a background of flames. State Rep. Doug Ericksen, R-Bellingham, called it an "anti-Christian" symbol.

Paul Berendt, the state Democratic chairman, said he was surprised to find the item advertised on the Web site. He told The Seattle Times the magnet was not properly vetted and was removed from the party's site after less than 48 hours.

He apologized for offending anyone, and called the item embarrassing. "We didn't sell any of them, and we're not going to," Berendt said.

The fish magnet is copyrighted by a Mount Vernon company. Berendt said he was unsure of its meaning, but said he thinks it is aimed at "people who claim to be pro-life but are for the death penalty."

And many talking heads have tried to force him to, for a lot of different comments.

4. While I applaud the sentiments expressed by the magnet in question,

I understand that it may not reflect well on the party. Still, the point remains valid: Thugs will mock and libel and slander and smear and will never apologize; they'll excuse their hate by claiming it as cherished church teachings. But Dems apologize if the wind changes direction. Good thing some of our guys are rediscovering their cojones.

When it is just expressing Christ's words, I guess some people think Christ is anti-Christian

It's pretty clear that to Jesus, "hypocrites" defines the type of persons confined in hell, which is all the magnet is conveying.

The article clearly states that the item in question wasn't vetted.

The Democratic chair is clearly apologizing because an item slipped into their site that (even if it's not offensive to most), he DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT.

What's wrong with saying, "Damn.. sorry, I didn't even know it was on the site" :shrug:

I sure wish I had the tape of Mayor Jim West-R that was on here not long ago as the tears rolled down his fat face and he blubbered away trying to apologize his way out of the allegations of his disgusting sexual assaults on young boys.
