It's time for a new Democratic whip NOW!
The House roll call results for the Patriot Act Reauthorization just came online.

Look which side the minority whip, Steny Hoyer is on. (I'll give you a hint...aye).

This isn't the first time either. He supported the bankruptcy bill as well. Now that's his right, but he shouldn't be the one counting Democratic votes if he isn't going to vote with the Democrats.

1. There weren't enough votes there in any case
Even if the 44 voted no. :(

18. that doesn't matter. It's the individual votes and stands that count
not the political posturing or knowledge that Dems
aren't the majority.

8. It's not that
The GOP would use it a talking point against us. They would say it smacked of pettiness or otherwise find a way trivialize his opinions or make him look like a statement rather than someone to listen and support. You have to remember that at one time 75% of Americans (the ill-informed non-DU'ers of the world) once believed that Saddam was responsible for 9/11. All it takes is repetition on the Sunday talk shows and the RW-controlled media.

11. Doggett's a respected Rep.
He's been on a leadership track since he took office in 95. He would hardly be a controversial choice.

21. That's a little unfair to Texas.
I doubt one could get elected here in Wisconsin statewide or in many other northern states for that matter.

23. It's the state constitution.
I doubt it would hold up to a federal court challenge, but it's the law.

24. It is? I find that highly unlikely.
It may be written into their constitution like it is in North Carolina, but because the U.S constitution supercedes it, it is quite useless.

26. I swear to God.
Technically, the US Constitution forbids a religious test for federal office. When the Texas Constitution was first adopted, the common belief was that the states could apply their own rules for their own government (kind of like states being allowed to choose a president in any manner they want.) Since, attitudes and court decisions have ruled that states must follow the rules of the USC. But it's still the law, and it hasn't been challenged in court-- a court increasingly being packed with states-rights advocates, I might add.

3. I agree......
Democrats can't stay together when those responsible to do the arm twisting are defecting on votes.

The responsibilities of the Minority Whip are counting votes and persuading Members to support the Democratic Caucus position on votes.

9. I agree... and Hoyer is my Congressman.
Recently, he also publicly opposed the Iraq stance of Murtha and Pelosis, fretting that the Dems will become known as "the pullout party."

After reading the below article, I agree we need a new Whip:

12. My rep voted no, but WTF is wrong with the MD delegation.
Three of the six Democrats voted for this travesty. The ultraconservative republican voted no, and the alleged moderate republican voted yes. In a 6 to 2 Democratic delegation, the votes were 4-4. This is ridiculous. I am already an Mfume supporter, but Cardin's yes vote makes my support that much stronger.
