A great man, Eugene McCarthy, has died
Some quotes:

"This is, I say, the time for all good men not to go to the aid of their party, but to come to the aid of their country. "

"Saying we should keep the two-party system simply because it is working is like saying the Titanic voyage was a success because a few people survived on life rafts. "

"It is dangerous for a national candidate to say things that people might remember."

"Nixon is the kind of guy who, if you were drowning twenty feet from shore, would throw you a fifteen-foot rope."

"One thing about a pig, he thinks he's warm if his nose is warm. I saw a bunch of pigs one time that had frozen together in a rosette, each one's nose tucked under the rump of the one in front. We have a lot of pigs in politics."

3. Hahahah, I love the second quotation.
A humorous analogy albeit about a serious issue.

5. Gene McCarthy's picture was the cover of my college speech class text.
He was a man who could use public communication to achieve social ends.

6. Imagine what would have happened if he won the nomination in 1968
And been elected. I don't think Nixon would have won. We WOULD have been out of Vietnam much sooner. Many, many lives wouldn't have been sacrificed.

McCarthy was a good man. One of the most honorable men in public life is gone. Very, very sad.

9. My first political campaign
Presidential, that is. I learned a LOT about fighting cozy, entrenched politicos who were convinced the people did not know what was going on.

Yeah, that Humphrey campaign was something to behold.
And he almost didn't lose, providing a vital battle plan to subsequent Democratic nominees ever since: run like you will almost win.

10. Another Quote: "Bush is bullying everything."
On his 85th birthday in 2001, McCarthy told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that President Bush was an amateur and said he could not even bear to watch his inauguration.

In an interview a month before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, McCarthy compared the Bush administration with the characters in the William Golding novel "Lord of the Flies," in which a group of boys stranded on an island turn to savagery.

"The bullies are running it," McCarthy said. "Bush is bullying everything."
