Cartoon: the Independent voter wakes up just in time ...
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 01:41 AM by Neil Lisst
Are Independent Voters lazy and uninformed?

Neil Lisst political cartoon thinks so. They wake up just in time to cast a vote based upon slick TV advertising by candidates and interest groups.

1. What kind of voter doesn't know who to vote for by October?
Uninformed, that's what kind of voter.

and it looks like I have to.

What? No one besides me gets mad at the UNDECIDEDS on TV the last month before the presidential elections? Oh, they still don't know!

5. Thanks. Tomorrow, we add to it.
I feel that the uninformed are the reason money corrupts the election process so thoroughly. The ONLY reason commercials work is because 10% of the voting public enters September every four years wondering what the hell is going on.

These UNDECIDEDS are seen on TV shows, agonizing over whether to believe Bush or Kerry. Well, if they'd paid attention, they wouldn't have to wonder!

I got so sick of seeing these yo-yos in 2000 and 2004. Anyone who had to struggle over the choices shouldn't be voting.

6. I remember seeing them on CNN.
If they couldn't see the clear differences between Kerry and President Shithead, I'm wondering how they function in their day-to-day life.

8. I literally yelled at them through the TV.
It reminded me of students who don't pay attention in class, don't study, then get to an exam or lab and are trying to figure out what the other 80% know because they did take some time to find out.

If it's September before the election, it's too late to gain the knowledge you need to vote intelligently. How can you KNOW something without absorbing it over years?

One thing I respect about their 35% on the far right is they know who their guys are. They're not confused, and neither is the 35% on our end. It's that floating middle. We have about 10% that run from one side of the political canoe to the other, usually all together.

10. Exactly.
They're the ones who didn't like Kerry because his wife was "uppity" or liked Bush because he seemed like a "regular guy."

If you checked Bush's poll ratings, his approval among Independents/Undecideds has plummeted by half only a year after many of them voted for him.

Seriously, what did Bush do (or not do) a year after the election that actually surprised people? His handling of Katrina and Iraq were no big shock to people like us who knew he was an idiot, so why couldn't these Undecideds pull their heads out of their butts in time?

11. Bush was a guy they could drink a beer with!
I wanted to say SHUT THE HELL UP!!

First of all, we don't need a president we can drink a beer with. Watch King of the Hill if you need guys to drink a beer with.

Second, Bush wouldn't drink a beer with you unless it was a photo op.

7. The problem is they don't understand its importance, Neil.
So often the same individual will spend hours agonizing over which brand of car (lipstick, cereal, detergent - you name it) to buy. And of course, once the purchase is made it's relatively insignificant in terms of future impact on his/her life.

But the voting booth - for so many the impact of that decision seems to register on awareness for about the length of time it takes to drive to the polling place, pull the lever, and the very next concern is "Do I have time to go by Starbuck's before I have to go back to work? Oh, hell, I shouldn't have wasted that time voting!"

And of course, the impact of the vote is virtually lifelong for most folks ... it's just hard for them to put it in perspective because they don't "worry" about it.

IMO.

9. You have nailed it!
The same person who wails about "politics" and how messy it is, that guy will be swayed by slick TV commercials paid for by gigantic corporations and vested interests. He'll tell you he hates politics, then eat up some bogus "flip flop" argument.

I tell those people that they are the ones who are to blame for the impact of big money on politics. Without their ignorance and gullibility, the slick tv ads would not have a market. If you are a Chevy guy, no amount of Ford ads will make you want one.

13. Be sure to see this one. It sets up the one for Thursday.
In less than four hours, our second one in the American Independent series goes up online. You can see it here at midnight Central time.

What happens when the Independent stumbles out of his or her hibernation just before the election? They're hungry, they're foggy-headed, and they sometimes make mistakes.
