Best Bat ever

Why the world's best 13th birthday party has Iraq vets' blood boiling

On the day the President told the American people to prepare for the long haul in Iraq, here’s a story that seems to perfectly sum up our priorities as a nation. They’re calling it Mitzvahpalooza. It may go down in history as the world’s most obscene birthday party (eat your heart out Dennis Kozlowski). David H. Brooks, CEO of bulletproof vest maker DHB Industries, spared no expense for his 13-year old daughter’s entry into adulthood. The girl and 300 of her closest BFFs were entertained recently in New York’s Rainbow Room by Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Kenny G, Aerosmith and, believe it or not, 50 Cent (I guess 500 large can make you forget all about street cred). It was hosted by Tom Petty. The reported cost: $10 million. See the pics here.

First off, what 13-year old is a fan of Don Henley, Fleetwood Mac and, for God’s sake, Kenny G? Who was this party really for? Second, and more importantly, where does a guy get $10 million to blow on a Bat Mitzvah? Well, it appears, from you, the American taxpayer. According to United for a Fair Economy, Brooks and Co. have made a tidy profit outfitting our nation’s fighting men and women in body armor that allegedly couldn’t take a hit from a 9mm round:

David H. Brooks, CEO of bulletproof vest maker DHB Industries, earned $70 million in 2004, 13,349% more than his 2001 compensation of $525,000. Brooks also sold company stock worth about $186 million last year, spooking investors who drove DHB’s share price from more than $22 to as low as $6.50 . In May 2005, the U.S. Marines recalled more than 5,000 DHB armored vests after questions were raised about their effectiveness. By that time, Brooks had pocketed over $250 million in war windfalls.

Read UFE’s full report Executive Excess 2005 (PDF, 3.81 MB).

According to a government memo uncovered in an eight-month investigation by the Marine Corps Times, the company’s vests, made by DHB subsidiary Point Blank Body Armor, failed tests when they suffered “multiple complete penetrations” of 9mm pistol rounds and other ballistics. In the memo, government ballistics expert James MacKiewicz said his office “has little confidence in the performance” of the body armor.

2. That's where bloggers come in
They have to keep it alive, and eventually, those legs will grow. The best example here is the Trent Lott at the Strom Thurmond b'day party story. It was ignored by the MSM, but kept alive by bloggers.

Keeop trying, and send it to bloggers.

5. I sent it to Buzzflash and TPM ...plus kicked it here on DU figuring all
the DU'ers would post it on their own blogs and send it to our "list?"

 I've not seen it anywhere but here? Maybe I missed it on Buzzflash...but it seemed a story perfect for them to pick up with a "witty/sarcastic comment."

Where is it? Maybe it was fake and that's why the Lefty Blogs didn't do with it? It was sort of Bizarre and OTT...

7. Boy, am I in the wrong line of work...
...when MY daughter turned 13 two months ago, we had my mom, my sister, a kid from down the block as guests, and some Chinese food and cake.

She got a couple of video games, some CDs, and jeans with flowers on 'em, and was happy as hell.

8. I've got to believe it was the "Daddy's Party" and not the kids...
I don't even think the "Robber Barons" at the turn of the century lived it up like this. :eyes: They had huge house and social events...but this is like so incredible...it blows ones mind...given what's going on in New Orleans and Gulf Coast...and folks in Pakistan and Indonesia.

9. People are ignoring the implications of where the money even came
from because they have been told to. The attack against this article is that others are simply jealous of the rich...

11. One question that lingers in my Mind on top of the sheer blatant
obscenity of this event is:

WHAT in the HELL were Don Henley and Stevie Nicks DOING at an event like this and why would they lend their time to something so blatantly disgusting?

Why?

Has EVERYONE gone totally Bat-Shit Insane?
