Chimp using troops as props: Could it finally backfire?

It really grates on me when Chimp uses troops as a backdrop when he needs to defend his war. The irony of this chickenhawk preaching about sacrifice is an outrage, especially when he talks "tough" to the people who he's putting at risk, telling them the way to honor those who've died in Iraq is to keep going and have MORE of them die in Iraq.

Could it finally dawn on people how outrageous it is, and backfire?

Democrats have accused the president of using the military as props, as he did in his "Mission Accomplished" speech aboard an aircraft carrier in May 2003. But his defenders say that is one of any president's prerogatives.

"The president talks about the war on terrorism in many different formats, but he is the commander in chief, we are a nation at war, and no one has more invested in this war than our men and women in uniform," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

There could be a downside, suggested Wayne Fields, director of American culture studies at Washington University in St. Louis and a specialist on presidential rhetoric.

"Going back again and again to the troops is also a constant reminder to Americans of just who is taking the risks in Iraq. I don't think it's playing particularly well," Fields said.

1. Since the military is the only thing he can really order around

they stand him in front of a crowd under orders to be polite and look thrilled. The photos this past week of sleeping midshipmen waiting on the Chickenhawk In Chief pretty well stuck a pin in the balloon they used to lift their boy. The TROOPS are not excited. The emperor is exposed, bare butt and buck naked.

He can't even get his dog to look up to him fondly. They might have to stop taking his picture all together. ;)

By always whopping it up with "da troops", Bush/Rove/Cheney figure they can stir up more anti-US solier backlash. That worked well for RWingers politically during the Nixon era. Reagen always used the "spitting on our soldiers" shit, too. Bush figures he encourage some spitting for political gain. The tortue authorizations at Al Ghaurib help for that too.
