Post-Gazette: Profile of Rep. John Murtha (Good article for non-PA DUers)
<snip>
Rep. Murtha an unstinting supporter of military
Friday, November 18, 2005

By James O'Toole, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

On a January morning 30 years ago, Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson came to Johnstown, drumming up votes for a young legislator hoping to make the leap to Congress in a closely watched special election.

"What I like about Jack Murtha is that he's full of horse sense and he has his head screwed on right," Mr. Jackson told a breakfast of union officials.

<snip>
"This is not somebody that would say this without a lot of research and a lot of soul-searching," said U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Swissvale, who, unlike Mr. Murtha, voted against President Bush's war authorization request. "He's the consummate inside player."

Referring to the visits to Walter Reed and Bethesda hospitals that Mr. Murtha alluded to his in speech, Mr. Doyle said, "He goes to see those kids every week."

1. Murtha is an old fashioned "Scoop" Jackson Democrat
A liberal on economic policy and union issues/ moderate on social issues and probably usually a hawk on foreign policy--so that's what makes his turning against Bush on Iraq even more impressive.

2. Massachusetts Cong. McGovern
"This shows it is not just people like me who opposed the war from the beginning who are dissenting here." He also stated that "Murtha's change of heart together with a resolution in the Republicans Controlled Senate urging that Iraqis take over the fighting are evidence official opinion is starting to catch up with public opinion." He thinks that the United States should pull out in a "safe and orderly fashion" allow international peace keepers to move in and insist Iraqis take responsibility for their own security. So the democrats have people who are with Murtha so don't whine about them. The rest will follow.
