First Print Newspaper publishing of Neil Lisst political cartoon!
I've been hestitant to mention this, because the newspaper's online edition does not show the cartoon. Their online version is very abbreviated, and doesn't show their daily political cartoon, which runs on the Op-Ed page.

On Sunday, one of the regular columnists at the Lufkin Daily News, Cynthia Hall Clements, did a piece about torture and the Bush fall from grace. In it, she mentioned the Neil Lisst comic from last week, the International Jeopardy cartoon.

Yesterday I got an email from their editor saying they were using the WHITE HOUSE APPRENTICE cartoon in the Wednesday (today) paper. It ran there today on the editorial page, right below Molly Ivins' column.

This paper is part of the Cox News chain, which includes such papers as The Austin American-Statesman.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy!!

1. it's a city of about 45,000 with 45,000 more outside city limits
Lufkin, that is.

This paper is the largest paper in the area from Beaumont to Tyler to Fort Worth to Houson. It's slightly more liberal than the community.

Good editorial page, especially for a paper of this size.

7. glad you like it. We are having fun doing it.
We went online with Neil Lisst 9-11-05, and it's been great fun.

I'm looking forward to getting more print gigs.

They've already told me they're using another one on Sunday for the Op-Ed page. It's one we haven't published yet, but will publish online at midnight tonight.

9. Glad to hear it! They're drawn in Canada, by a CANADIAN!!
I'm a Texan, my artist partner in this comic is a Canadian.

Every cartoon must be birthed by emails, and some are easy births, and some are all placenta. Those are frustrating. I keep them in my NEIL LISST LOST COMICS files. I figure we use them for parts if we have to.

Shorty Bush is the only thing in the comic I've drawn.

11. That time may come.
We feel that getting our cartoon out there as much as possible is our best plan, and wait to make a deal until demand is chasing us.

See where it goes.

Neither of us need to make a deal, so that makes waiting easy.

12. OK, we're going to have to work on that attitude.
:)

Practice this response to the statement "we're going to print your cartoon":

"Great! Email me a contract!"

14. But right now, we want max circulation!
We can't be talking about that much money at this point.

Now if we get some kind of rep ... I suppose we will look at it.

16. Even if you're not getting paid,
you'd want a contract and the paper should expect you to respond that way.

Either they'll send you a contract that says they're not paying you, which you'd apparently be happy with, or they'll send you their standard minimum cartoon contract which might pay you $500 or something like that and which won't limit the number of people who see you at all.

I was thinking a few minutes ago about what a jerk Bush is to be lecturing China on human rights, and suddenly I thought "hey ..."

So I wrote one and shipped it off.

I already knew I wanted to do one with Bush in China, so my cartoonist partner in Canada has been drawing the basic comic. I've been working on what the captions and bubbles will be, looking at ideas, throwing them away. He makes me work more on the lines if they're not good enough, and I make him work more on the art if it's missing something. I think that shows in the quality of the comic.

He's up there in the Great White North, snowed in, with his family, animals, and work.

We do this long distance, like 2000 miles apart.
