Whats your opinion of Patrick Buchanan?
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 09:32 PM by nickshepDEM
In a sentence or two.

Asking because... I recently picked up his book "Where the Right Went Wrong: How Neoconservatives Subverted the Reagan Revolution and Hijacked the Bush Presidency"

And I must say, so far its not that bad. Im 10 pages in and he's already nailing Bush and the neocons for overstretching out military.

Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 09:33 PM by musette_sf
Oh, yeah, I forgot elitist, exclusionary, and intolerant of diversity.

Now THAT should do it.

Oops, forgot Nixon toady and image-maker, and friend of Watergate co-conspirators, who feels that Nixon got a raw deal. :eyes:

Okay, I feel I must add that I have read several of his books, and watch him regularly on McLaughlin's Champeenship Politico Wrasslin Half-Hour. Nothing has happened as of yet to alter my opinion.

26. Buchanan wrote that even democratic imperialism is imperialism
He opposes the neocons foreign policy just as fervently as any left winger, and he's been spot on in his criticism of Bush/Cheney. I read his columns for their historical contextualization of what this administration is doing. Super smart man.

33. So, you agree with this? Sorry, I don't....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Buchanan#Political_views

<snip>

Buchanan has described multiculturalism as "an across-the-board assault on our Anglo-American heritage" and supports restricting immigration into the United States. He has described homosexuality as leading to "a decay of society and a collapse of its basic cinder block, the family." He opposes abortion, including in cases of rape and incest. He supports allowing prayer in public schools. He supports abolishing many government bureaus and advocates a flat tax. He is in favor of ending treaties that do not protect the interests of the United States, such as one-way defense treaties where the U.S. must militarily come to the defense of another country, but not vice versa.

16. Buchanan is an old school fascist.
His opposition to the Iraq war comes from his distrust
of Jews and fear of Israel, a cause near and dear to
most neocons. His is an old style know-nothing populist.
His promotes xenophobia and isolationism.

He always has nice things to say about self-avowed fascists
and they claim him as one of their own. And he has never
been shy about defending "unfairly" accused suspected Nazis.

25. He is an old school typical anti-semite catholic with conservative
values - values that my folks had. He is believes in the constitution and has deep convictions about what his party was (good) and what it is now (bad). Sometime's he pisses me off to know end, I want to throw a shoe at the TV, other time, I truely admire the man and respect his conservative veiw points because he seems to be one of the few Republicans left today that actually defends what the party was and ought to be. Not that I agree at all with them, but I see him always bringing up the Goldwater Reagan conservatives and how they were true GOP where as Bush and the Conns are just that...Conns.

27. He's got the exclusionary stuff down pat
So I can't write too many positives. At least he doesn't automatically slant every issue toward the righty viewpoint. He did during the campaign and especially the debates last year, the partisanship overflowed. But since the war he'll look at issues more balanced and I agree with one poster he has many good points based on historical analysis. Certainly preferable now to his term on Crossfire.

49. I wish more repugs were like Pat Buchanan
let me qualify that. He's clear and straight-forward in his views. With Pat Buchanan, what you see is what you get. I grudgingly admit to agreeing with him at least twice over the past few decades, although I can't remember about what, all I remember is that I'm always shocked.

So, even though I disagree with almost everything this man believes, I like him in the sense that he never hedges and puts his views out clearly for others to agree with or refute.
