WHY: Edwards has been touring college campuses this fall to talk about poverty in America, calling poverty "the great moral issue facing America today." Edwards founded and now directs the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
The Coalition was founded in 1980 when local social workers started noticing a growing number of homeless people at Chicago's airport, bus and train stations. Prior to that time, homeless people on the streets were not a common phenomenon.
A new 25-year status report, Far From Home, was released by the Coalition on Friday, November 4. The report showed that the problem of homelessness in Chicago has gotten significantly worse and continues to grow.
