The Latest From Joe Lockhart...
09:10 AM -- Tuesday December 23 2003

Posted by "Celebrity Guest" Joe Lockhart

Here's the latest from the John Edwards 2004 campaign in Raleigh. I'm Joe Lockhart...some of you may remember that I worked for President Clinton. For those of who don't, I'm the guy whose first day on the job as Press Secertary was also the day the House opened the impeachment hearings.

So, it goes without saying I have great timing. My timing has improved though. Not everyone gets to come to the national hq of the campaign Rush Limbaugh has decided has to be stopped. Check out his website and try to figure out what he was getting at with his Edwards "breck girl" routine. Now there are a lot of obvious ways I could go after Rush...but I like to think I'm above that...feel free to speculate, unmedicated that is, on your own.

Anyway, you know things are going well when Rush decides to turn his guns on you.

Joe keep your bags packed to go to Vermont

Joe,

Keep your bags packed so that you can quickly leave and go to Vermont to support the Dean team after Edwards loses IA, NH, and SC.

Only Dean, Clark, and Gephardt will be left standing after the primaries in IA, NH, and SC.

The national Gallup poll and numerous other polls show Edwards near the bottom. In the Gallup poll Edwards is tied for sixth with Sharpton, who's the primary joke. The CBS poll along with others showed similiar results to the Gallup poll.

Polls in SC shows that Sharpton will take the African American vote away from Edwards. Edwards can't win without the African American vote. Whites don't support him in large percentages. If it wasn't for 90% of the African American voters in North Carolina voting for Edwards in 1998, Edwards would not have won his Senate seat.

Edwards has the same problem in 2004 that Gore had in 2000. Edwards can't win without carrying over 90% of the African American vote. Sharpton will keep Edwards from winning because Sharpton will carry the African American vote in the primaries, especially in South Carolina.

Dedicated to keeping Edwards from getting the nomination. Dean, Clark, and Gephardt are the real Democrats in the prima.

Thanks for the comment. Lot's of good poll stuff..even better process stuff. Unfortunately for some, real actual voters start getting a say soon. Thank God...we've suffered enough process babble already. Edwards won in 1998 because he convinced a majority of Tar Heels that he was right for the state and the country. I know it's lonely being a Tar Heel not for Edwards...but it's good to know anger has a silent voice here in NC...btw..my bags are packed but I think my visa to Burlington has been revoked...hard to know since those records are still sealed.

2. It was the RMS Titanic...
...and the tarheelnotforedwards blogger is awfully cocky for someone who doesn't have the good sense to know that national polls are just about useless right now.

4. Joe's wrong about one thing
Anger at Edwards is not silent in NC, but we'll leave that for another day.

6. You make that claim a lot, but you never back it up.
The guy's a Dem in a conservative state. Clearly some Republicans aren't going to like him. But he polls really well in NC.

8. Sigh
I've backed up plenty. I was merely calling out Joe on his shit and attempting, in the spirit of the season, not to taunt Edwards' supporters. But if you want me to turn this into an Edwards bash, I will.

22. All you have to do is back up your claim when you make it.
Or, if you have already, just give me a link to the thread.

7. What makes you think that's a Dean supporter?
Did I miss something? He didn't say who he supports, he was just being a general jerk about Edwards' chances.

But I guess any excuse to take a poke at Dean and his supporters will do, huh?

9. Let' see, he says "pack you bags for Burlington"
and then ends with the preposterous conclusion that "Dean, Clark, and Gephardt are the real Democrats in the prima".

LOL. Never mind that Kerry and Kucinich are hands down the 2 most liberal guys running. Although maybe he means Democrats in the "centrist" sense, which would then make Edwards a favorite.

I vote: Dean troll.

Gephardt. So, sorry, I think you're mistaken. I vote freeper disruptor.

28. You have to read all this poster's posts.
He's often pro-Dean, but slips up and says things suggesting he's really a Republican hoping Bush wins.

18. You missed something
Taken directly from the original post on this thread (emphasis mine):

"Keep your bags packed so that you can quickly leave and go to Vermont to support the Dean team after Edwards loses IA, NH, and SC."

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, chances are pretty good that it's a duck.

21. That doesn't convince me this person is a Dean supporter
He's obviously rabidly anti-Edwards, but I didn't see anything to warrant Lockhart's swipe at Dean.

Not that he really needs a reason.

23. Because he says Joe should go work for Dean.
But he also praises Helms elsewhere on the blog, so he's probably just a republican who hopes Dean gets nominated.

12. This type of stuff
is posted at the Kerry blog too. Once I decided to leave the Dean camp I never went back to their site...why do these people continue to go to the sites of the other candidates and taunt, insult and act downright childish. This is what we expect from FReepers not Democrats in the same camp.

13. If it was a Dean supporter,
he/she was not being nice. Joe Trippi has repeatedly told us never to post on the blogs of other campaigns. It's counterproductive to troll any place, it just reflects badly on whoever you are supporting. However, just because someone says they support a certain candidate, doesn't mean they actually do, that kind of thing happens too. :argh:

14. You haven't been here enough to know the story
See the people who post here are psychic and always can tell a Dean supporter. And Dean supporters are evil rat bastards who kill and eat cats. You will learn this when you are here longer but that is the God's honest truth. (sarcasm)

25. Well,
trolls are nasty little creatures who sit in their lairs trying to cause trouble on message boards and blogs. Just because a troll sits at its computer and types,"Keep your bags packed so that you can quickly leave and go to Vermont to support the Dean team after Edwards loses IA, NH, and SC", doesn't mean it's not a Lying Troll(the worst kind). They can type anything they want without their conscience getting in the way. Sort of like certain members of the opposing party. They could easily have typed in,"Keep your bags packed so that you can quickly leave and go to Arkansas to support the Clark team after Edwards loses IA, NH, and SC", or "Keep your bags packed so that you can quickly leave and go to Missouri to support the Gephardt team after Edwards loses IA, NH, and SC". :tinfoilhat: Anything to cause trouble between the campaigns, as if there wasn't enough of that.

24. I'm going to repeat something I posted
before because I think it needs to be said here-

There has been a lot of friction here at DU among self-professed Dean supporters, and supporters of other candidates. After the last debate, several things happened in the Kucinich camp that weren't fun for us to cope with. Our volunteer board was over-run with angry military folks over the Eric Blumrich animation, and at least one of them decided to take it to the DFA boards to smear Dennis.

The response from Dean supporters? None whatsoever- and I mean that as a positive thing. I rebutted the accusations of the person at DFA with no comment from Dean's supporters (well one, but even I thought it was funny!) and no interferance from board Moderators. To add to my reason to respect Dean's supporters, several DID come post nice things at our board, and let me tell you it was a welcome sight since those posts were coming up at the same time as the attack on the forum! I owe the Dean supporters who took the time to make those posts a huge debt of gratitude because some of them helped keep me sane while I tried to snag trolls as fast as they could create new names.

I've posted a few comments to general discussion topics at DFA, but never spoken against Gov. Dean. I'm doing my damndest to make that a new absolute rule for myself. If I criticize it's going to be something that genuinely concerns me and not personal baggage because I'm pissed at a Dean supporter.

At any rate, those of you who are regulars at DFA, thanks for all your patience when our forums mess came to your board, and thanks for helping me get through a tough few days.

i totally agree with what lockhart says about them not wanting edwards to win. he understands these things. i'm not surprised he is on edward's side considering how he is also a big supporter of clinton. he knows how the righ wing tried to stop clinton.

20. Pretty good analyis on your part.
But I think it will be Dean Clark and Kerry still in after South Round 1. If Clark gets a big endorsement sometime around the two post-NH primaries it may just be Clark and Dean heading into the midwest w/ Clark having the big mo afer big southern wings.

I like those odds--The war will be a mionor part of the campaign rhetoric since Dean and Clark are two peas in the anti-war pod. The main issue will be who can beat Chimp. Advantage, Clark. The main political factor will be who Dean, Edwards, Kerry and Lieberman support. Clark advantage, big time.
