Computer programmer Clinton Curtis testified at the December 13th, 2004 Congressional hearing in Columbus, Ohio naming Republican Congressman Tom Feeney as the person who hired him to prepare vote-rigging software.
The programmer claims that he designed and built a "vote rigging" software program at the behest of then Florida Congressman, now U.S. Congressman, Republican Tom Feeney of Florida's 24th Congressional District.
...Curtis says that Feeney "was very specific in the design and specifications required for this program."
"He detailed, in his own words, that; (a) the program needed to be touch-screen capable (b) the user should be able to trigger the program without any additional equipment (c) the programming to accomplish this needed to stay hidden even if the source code was inspected."
Though there was no problem with the first two requirements, Curtis explained to the Congressman that it would be "virtually impossible to hide such code written to change the voting results if anyone is able to review the uncompiled source code"
Nonetheless, he was asked at the meeting by Mrs. Yang to build the prototype anyway.

Good God, do you see how many times this appears?

If they nail Abramoff, that's it.
It's over.
It's like that ZZ Top song.

He's bad, he's Nationwide.

Kicked and nominated!

Having known Republican Marty all my life - I can tell you that the charges were probably true - it was no secret Marty dealt drugs and liked VERY young girls - all the while calling for a return to "moral values." He despised Clinton and was a GWB worshipper. He was also a spoiled little rich boy.

35. Wow, nice list. Recommended
I'd like to add another for Rohrabacher (Ca), from today's LA Times:

Spokesmen at two nonpartisan watchdog groups in Washington said Rohrabacher may have crossed an ethical line when he helped the producer set up meetings with congressmen and government officials after accepting money for the screenplay.

Federal authorities now allege that Medawar's television project was at the heart of an elaborate swindle in which Medawar defrauded dozens of people — many of them Orange County and South Los Angeles churchgoers — by selling $5.5 million of stock in Steeple.

Medawar, arrested last month, has pleaded not guilty to a 23-count indictment. He faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.

snip...

Rohrabacher reported the $23,000 payment from Medawar in his 2004 financial disclosure statement. He did not disclose on the House ethics form that he had "a reportable outside arrangement or agreement" with Medawar.

Can't find any links for you, oddly enough.

But he ran in 2002 against Dennis Moore, and then tried again in 2004 but lost in the Primary.

The accusations allege that Taft used his campaign money, several hundred thousand dollars from it, to finance a large home in Johnson County, KS.

Ken Tomlinson: http://www.broadcastingcable.com/CA6281019.html
Ken Ferree: http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6271549.html

Recent policies at the CPB are being investigated by the inspector general. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/12/AR2005051201754.html

Ken Ferree was a crony appointment at the FCC. He was a college buddy and long-time associate of FCC Chairman, Michael Powell. Michael Powell is Colin Powell's son. Does that make Ferree a second order crony or a crony squared?

47. Question to ALL READERS HERE
Should we include WAR CRIMINALS? I realize we don't have indictments AND we're likely to see impeachment before we see a tribunal...I want to include "ADDINGTON"
-------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/white_house/july-dec05/wilk_11-4.html

RAY SUAREZ: This backing off of the Geneva Accords, Wilkerson says, led to the abuses at Abu Ghraib.

COL. LAWRENCE WILKERSON (Ret.): There's a fine line between the brutal behavior necessary to yield force -- wield force, for the state, and going over that line.

So one of the reasons you have these codes instilled in every soldier's heart, and you have this love of war and so forth, is not just it's American values, but you want to give the leaders, the platoon leaders and the company commanders and the battalion commanders the tools to control this use of brute force for the state.

When you relax those rules, you're inviting real problems; you're inviting the kind of problems we had at Abu Ghraib. I have to go back to the vice president's office and hold it culpable, too, because one of the early-on, aggressive participants in this debate about whether or not America could, in fact, change 200 years of policy was David Addington. He's the person that's replacing Scooter Libby. He was the intellectual legal guru, if you will, behind the discussion about the commander in chief having the right in this new situation -- new situation being the war on terror -- to make exceptions.
----------------------------------------------------

57. Regarding the Alabama listing
There has been zero in in-state media about Riley and Shelby taking any money from Abramoff.

The Shelby scandal, which sort of died out quickly, was about whether he leaked classified information when he was chairman of the Intelligence Committee. As far as I know, that issue was never resolved.

Too bad you can't be prosecuted for being a dick head, or Santorum would have made PA's list.
Of course, there is the little issue of his defrauding his PA school district out of funds. But that was dismissed on a technicality, IIRC.

Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa.: The senator encountered controversy over disclosures that local Pennsylvania taxpayers paid for his children's schooling while they lived in Virginia. Santorum maintained he did nothing wrong, and he has since pulled his children out of the school, according to news reports.

73. TN - State Rep candidate murders Dem opponent (1998)
Republican candidate arrested for murdering opponent
By Martin McLaughlin
24 October, 1998
The Republican candidate for state senate in an east-central Tennessee district was arrested October 23 on charges that he murdered his Democratic opponent four days earlier. Byron Looper, 34, was arrested without incident as he returned to his home in Cookeville early Friday morning.

Looper was an extreme right-wing zealot who changed his middle name from Anthony to "Low Tax" before the election campaign. He won election as tax assessor of Putnam County, Tennessee in 1996, with the support of the county Republican Party.

The man he apparently murdered, incumbent Democrat Tommy Burks, 58, had served eight years in the state house and 20 years in the state senate, and was expected to win reelection easily. Burks was shot to death in his pickup truck October 19 as he was preparing to receive a group of visiting school children at a pumpkin patch on his Cumberland County farm.

78. MI -addition - Detroit election fraud investigation ordered
Detroit City Clerk Jackie Currie was headed toward a stunning loss this morning just hours after a Wayne County judge granted a federal prosecutor's request for controversial absentee ballots to be preserved as part of an investigation into possible election fraud.

The bad news for Currie at the polls was punctuated by the order from Wayne County Circuit Chief Judge Mary Beth Kelly, adding to a frenetic Election Day that also included charges of voter intimidation and a federal judge's reminder to political parties that their observers could not talk to voters at precincts.

Reacting to the ongoing controversy swirling around Currie and her handling of elections, Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn Helland told Kelly on Tuesday evening that his office and the FBI are investigating concerns that ballots may have been cast under the names of dead voters.

<snip>

State officials have said some portions of that program -- including ambassadors' helping voters fill out ballots in group settings, not signing their names on sealed ballot envelopes and advertising their services in nursing homes -- are in violation of state law.

79. Detroit MI - NAACP vs. GOP Election investigation
In an unrelated development, U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen ordered all political parties to refrain from talking to voters at Detroit precincts.

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by the Detroit Branch NAACP, which said it had received complaints from 19 polling places that state and national GOP monitors were harassing voters. Republicans disputed the claim.

Police were called to the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church as GOP watchers and NAACP members confronted each other outside a polling place, each alleging the other was trying to stymie a fair election.

The lawsuit charged that GOP workers were harassing voters in violation of a state law that prohibits poll challengers from talking to voters. The suit also said the watchers challenged the eligibility of Detroiters to cast ballots, prompting some to leave without voting.

On Tuesday, the state Court of Appeals rejected Currie's immediate request that it stop the state-county supervision.

Currie's office has been under scrutiny since Maureen Taylor sued her in August after losing a bid for City Council. Taylor said Currie had interfered with the Aug. 2 primary to ensure Taylor would not win a spot in the general election.

"Jackie Currie doesn't believe the law applies to her," said Taylor's attorney Stephen Wasinger.

OCALA — State laws and rules regarding its corporate tax-credit vouchers were not specific enough about how money could be used, the lawyer for a bankrupt Ocala businessman accused of stealing $268,125 from the program told jurors Tuesday.

Department of Financial Services investigator Bill Geier told jurors that Isenhour used $131,000 of the original $268,000 to help bail out his for-profit but financially troubled correspondence school and transferred another $50,000 into checks made out to himself and cash — including $7,500 for a bedroom furniture set for his home.

Grand Theft Jobs: Millions are missing at a powerful union-backed worker-training group
by Tom Robbins
November 8th, 2005 11:04 AM

This fall, a top official at the city's largest job-training organization quietly told co-workers that he had terminal cancer and only months to live.
The news hit Osei Boateng's colleagues at the Consortium for Worker Education especially hard. Boateng, a native of Ghana, was just 36 years old with a wife and young children. A former state assembly aide with an MBA, Boateng had worked at the nonprofit group for a decade and had risen to become chief financial officer. Thanks to its backing by many of New York's largest unions, the Consortium carries heavy political clout in Albany, City Hall, and even Congress. Once closely aligned with the Giuliani administration, the group played a major role in the city's welfare-to-work programs. Over the past six years, Boateng helped the organization win more than $300 million in government contracts to train blue-collar workers ranging from bakers to hospital employees. He had also overseen a much praised effort to aid workers and businesses devastated by 9-11, using $32 million specially allocated by Congress. He'd only recently finished a painful restructuring of the organization after that funding was exhausted.

<snip>

Despite his claim to be headed for Canada, Boateng, whose family is prominent in Ghana, was arrested last month at his Brooklyn home. Charged with grand larceny, he did not request hospitalization or special medical treatment at his arraignment. He is currently being held at Rikers Island as a flight risk. His attorney, David Ruck, did not respond to calls.

88. TX - addition - Roy Blunt's son, Andrew Blunt
For probably the best evidence that DeLayism is an institutional imperative, not just the personal quirk of a particularly nasty Houston exterminator, consider one horrifying fact: DeLay's successor, Roy Blunt, is probably even sleazier than he is.
Blunt's contribution to the GOP cause has been to delegate the tasks of formulating legislation and rounding up votes to lobbyists. Whereas DeLay did this in a relatively informal way, Blunt has made the blurring between lobbyist and legislator formal. Blunt's admiring deputy told the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call that lobbyists "are really an extension of the whip team. Through Roy's leadership, we've been able to take this to the next level."

Blunt has brought to this task some characteristic flourishes that would make even DeLay blanch. Blunt's son, Andrew, is a lobbyist whose client list is filled with his father's donors. In 2003, he tried to sneak a provision into a domestic security bill benefiting Philip Morris. At the time he was dating a Philip Morris lobbyist, and he has since married her.

ST. PETERSBURG -- A Pinellas County insurance executive has been charged with a felony violation of state campaign finance laws, after two former employees said he used them to disguise contributions to state Insurance Commissioner Bill Nelson.

David H. Smith, president of Allied Specialty Insurance Inc. of Treasure Island, turned himself in at the Pinellas County Jail on Tuesday afternoon and was released on his own recognizance shortly after.

In political circles, Smith is best known as a major contributor to Republican causes. He, his various companies and people from the same corporate address gave $249,985 to the state Republican Party and several Republican candidates between January 1996 and October 1998, according to campaign reports filed with the Florida Secretary of State

The FBI and Capitol Police are investigating the vicious attack of a top Senate staffer at her home last week amid concerns that the assault might be related to her work on the Finance Committee.

Emilia DiSanto, chief investigator for committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), arrived at her suburban Virginia home after work Wednesday about 6:30 p.m. As she was unloading belongings from her car, a 6-foot-1-inch white man dressed in black struck her repeatedly with an unidentified object believed to be a baseball bat.

snip-

Grassley is known for his aggressive oversight of the public and private sector. Over the past year, he has scrutinized healthcare fraud, organ-donation procedures used by hospitals, drug-safety matters and the use of nonprofit groups related to former lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The attack and the possibility that it was motivated by congressional business have made some people anxious on Capitol Hill.

Enron execs re-indicted after mistrial

By Matt Daily
Reuters
Thursday, November 10, 2005; 12:58 PM

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A federal grand jury issued new indictments against five former executives from Enron Corp.'s broadband Internet unit, five months after the original case against them ended in a mistrial.

The grand jury issued the stripped-down indictments on Wednesday, and three separate trials will take place next year in the latest chapter of the case that began in March 2003.

The five were originally tried together in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas under an indictment that included more than 170 charges, but the new indictments together contain only 31 charges.

That first trial ended after three months when the jury deadlocked on most of the charges and found the defendants not guilty on two dozen counts.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Enron Task Force had told a federal judge at a hearing in September it intended to seek the new indictments.

Prosecutors contended the five men overpromoted EBS' Internet networking capabilities to stock analysts, whose positive reports caused the energy giant's stock price to jump sharply in early 2000.

Joseph Hirko, former co-chief executive of Enron Broadband Services, and Rex Shelby, a technology executive, were charged with 13 counts, including conspiracy, securities and wire fraud and insider trading. Their trial is scheduled to begin next September 5.

Kevin Howard and Michael Krautz, former finance executives, are charged in a five-count indictment of conspiracy, wire fraud and falsifying books and records. They are scheduled to go to trial on May 1.

Scott Yeager, a former technology executive, was indicted on five counts of insider trading and eight counts of money laundering, and will go on trial alone on June 5.

Enron, once the darling of Wall Street, collapsed into bankruptcy in December 2001 after its use of balance sheet tricks to hide tens of billions of dollars in debt was discovered.

More than 20 people have been convicted or pleaded guilty to crimes connected to Enron, which exited bankruptcy last year and is in the process liquidating its remaining assets to pay creditors.

Former Enron Chairman Ken Lay, former Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Skilling and former Chief Accounting Officer Richard Causey are scheduled to go on trial together in January.

U.S. Should Repay Millions to Iraq, a U.N. Audit Finds

An auditing board sponsored by the United Nations recommended yesterday that the United States repay as much as $208 million to the Iraqi government for contracting work in 2003 and 2004 assigned to Kellogg, Brown & Root, the Halliburton subsidiary.

The work was paid for with Iraqi oil proceeds, but the board said it was either carried out at inflated prices or done poorly. The board did not, however, give examples of poor work.
