Democrats are waiting too long to attack Alito, remember the 2004 election
Edited on Thu Nov-03-05 11:20 PM by Democat
I just read the poll in LBN about the American people having a favorable view of Alito. The reason for that is that most elected Democrats seem to be taking a wait and see approach to him while Republicans are in full spin mode saying how perfect he is.

By the time most Democrats do get around to educating the public, the public will already have made up their mind and Democrats will just be seen as attacking a great judge.

Does anyone remember the Kerry flip flop allegations? Bush attacked Kerry when the public was first developing an opinion on Kerry and that stuck through the whole campaign. Democrats should be mounting their strongest attack right now, when the public is just starting to form an opinion of Alito, like the Republicans are doing. Like a senator, Alito has plenty of history to mine for hypocrisy and extremism.

By the time Roberts came up for a vote, most Americans seemed to think he was fine because Democrats never mounted an effective public relations battle to tarnish him with his own views and votes.

What is the use of filibustering Alito if we can't convince the American public first that he is an extremist? If we allow Republicans to convince the public that he is a moderate great judge, and then we use the filibuster, then Democrats look like the extremists instead of Republicans. The way that the filibuster strategy works is if we first convince the American people that Alito is a right wing extremist, not a conservative.

1. The pro-Alito ads are already running on CNN...saw one
last night during the rerun of Larry King....

Dems need to start educating the public on this creep...now his Vanguard recusal problems on top of his AWFUL record....

They also need to shut Johnson, Nelson and all those "collegial" types away in a closet....Frist hates Reid now, so why expect any decency from him and the Repugs?? They're already doing the nuclear option talk.

It's war and it has to start NOW....Once their media machine takes hold, we will be screwed...

3. Most Democrats seem to taking a "wait and see" approach
Just like John Kerry did to the Swift Boat and Flip Flop ads, and look how well that worked out.

Come on Democrats, the time to educate the public is when they haven't fully formed their opinion on Alito, not after they already think they know him.

4. Our side has already run up the white flag on this one. AGAIN!
Democrats are only saying nice things about him or just saying lets "wait and see". Meanwhile, the positive RW spin machine is pimping Alito non stop.

By the time the Democrats decide to take him on (if they ever do), it will be too late. The public will have bought the RW bullshit. We've already lost a key round in the PR battle.

The Democrats should ALL be saying there are very troubling issues in Alito's past decision and that unless he can absolutely convince them they are aberrations, we will fight his getting a LIFETIME appointment.

My kingdom for a unified, fighting Democratic party!

5. The Vanguard issue alone could be enough to convince the public

Where are Democrats on this issue:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=5255510&mesg_id=5255510

If they ran the right ads (they must be bold) and said the right things, this one issue alone could hurt Alito very badly. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Where are the Democrats?
