College Democrats Stand Up Against Immoral Republican Budget Reconciliation
Washington, DC - Today, the College Democrats of America opposed a Republican budget plan to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy by cutting crucial programs that are important to American college students. The Republican budget would cut more than $14 billion in student loans that benefit over 14 million American students every year.
At a time when the cost of college tuition is skyrocketing and students and their families are struggling to finance the dream of higher education, these loans open the door to a college education for millions of students nationwide.
As thousands of young reservists return from serving our nation in Iraq, we must honor their service and make it easier for those who want to go to college. Democrats oppose the GOP plan to enact legislation that will prevent America's youth, including Iraq war veterans, from getting a college education.
"This budget does not reflect the values of America's youth," said Grant Woodard, President of the College Democrats. "At a time when families are struggling with high gas prices, rising health care costs, and the skyrocketing cost of college tuition, we should be making it easier for families to afford college, not harder. America can do better. Democrats believe that every American should have access to higher education and the American dream; it's time for these priorities to be reflected in the current budget."
