Clinton back for Corzine; Forrester slips in a poll

The ex-president made a second visit. A Forrester spokeswoman called it an attempt to shore up Corzine's "lackluster" record.

By Leonard N. Fleming

Inquirer Staff Writer

NEWARK, N.J. - Appearing in New Jersey for a second time to rally Democrats for the perceived gubernatorial front-runner, Bill Clinton told a capacity crowd that U.S. Sen. Jon S. Corzine had the best plan to lower property taxes, improve education, and lead a "tough state to govern."

Fresh from attending Rosa Parks' funeral in Detroit, the former president invoked the civil-rights icon, who had to take a literacy test to vote in the South, in an effort to remind his overwhelmingly African American audience not to take Tuesday's election for granted.

"You cannot afford to walk away from the chance to make him your governor," Clinton told a crowd of nearly 4,000 in the Essex County College gymnasium. It was the first of two scheduled rallies in Newark and Jersey City.

Amid chants of "four more years," Corzine praised Clinton as the "best president of our lifetime." He said he wanted to lead New Jersey as Clinton had led the United States, by creating jobs, making health care more available, and bolstering educational opportunities

1. Bush has a 65% disapproval rating in NJ.
Corzine should get 59%.

3. New Jersey Democrats are corrupt at the state level
Edited on Thu Nov-03-05 04:13 PM by Ignacio Upton
So Corzine won't win by that much due to a dissatisfaction with the part in general. He will win by 6-10% His first pledge as Governor should be to kick out all party bosses and rehabilitate the State Democrats. Dick Codey should also be appointed Senator as well.

5. He needs to win
Not worried about percentages as long as it's another "V" in the Victory column!

13. We have a whole wonderful world of bipartisan corruption here.
For example, in Monmouth County were I live they recently caught a whole bunch of local polls, I think it was 8 Republicans and 6 Democrats, taking cash and favors for contracts.

It was all little crap like the guy who got his driveway paved by a soon to be successful contractor (about $3,000) but of course if they were so easily bought for these minor bribes, you wonder what else they were doing.

Of course we still remember Bob, the Torch, Toricelli, whose hunger for petty graft amazed even veteran Garden State political junkies and Jim (hey I'm Gay) McGreevey whose spectacular coming out was sullied by the fact that he gave the object of his affections a six figure job in the homeland security department for which he was not even remotely qualified.

If Corzine can just keep reminding voters that he's relatively clean and that Republicans are crooks too he should be OK.

14. Experience says

that pushing out the corrupted Democrats begins at the grassroots. As long as nobody cares enough to get anything done about it, it's not going to change.

There are some pretty good lessons to be taken from our experience here in Mass. We had a big dramatic effort to de-corrupt the state party in the form of something called Clean Elections. Well, that got beaten back. But what took its place was a lot of shoeleather and networking based stuff on the part of Clean Elections survivors, and the gay marriage advocacy group MassEquality more or less ran the show as if it were itself a savvy little political party, and a lot of open seats and a few primary challenges were won by people endorsed and helped by these people last year. A bunch of internal scandals helped them, and the effect was dramatic- two years of intelligent, well-organized, work and they've got the corruptocrats and scumbag conservative Democrats bailing out of the state House and state Senate for the private sector.

The change in tone and behavior on both sides- citizens and state government- has been pretty remarkable. Suddenly everything seems to be working more efficiently, it's not purity but it's good accountability and action and transparency on all the important stuff, there's some real respect shown to the citizens and real support given by the citizens in return.

I miss Clinton. Apparently some of the so-called "Liberals" who hate Bush feel that he was just as bad.

6. Love NJ political commercials - they scramble to distance from *
"Bill Smith is slandering Bob Wheeler. Wheeler does NOT support the president's social security plan. He is FOR stem cell research...."

Love that an association with the White House is considered a minus.

17. I think Corzine is nearly a sure thing now. Forrester has shot his wad.
He would have to pull off a miracle in the last weekend before the election.
