LAUER: ...trying to see if there was any sense of shock on your face. Are you surprised by the (CIA Black Sites) report?

Pres. CARTER: No. In the--in the last five years there has been a profound and radical change in the basic policies or moral values of our country. This is just one indication of what has been done under this administration to change the policies that have persisted all the way through our history, including the policies of George Bush Sr., of Gerald Ford, of Ronald Reagan, of Dwight Eisenhower as well as Democrat presidents. And--and the--and the insistence by our government that the CIA or others have the right to torture prisoners in Guan--Guantanamo and around the world is just one indication of what this administration has done that's a radical departure from past policies.

______

But this is just one example of our nation's abandonment of the basic moral values that have made our country great. It's not--it's not just a Republican vs. Democrat, or a liberal vs. conservative. It--it's a basic change in the values of our country.
______

Pres. CARTER: Well, I think the--what the Democrats did yesterday is going to be very helpful. To--to require an investigation of why we went to war, which I think was completely unnecessary, an unjust war, and--and how much did we deliberately or inadvertently distort the available intelligence to try to mislead the American people into going to war? And I think the...

_____

Pres. CARTER: Well, I haven't seen proof yet. I think that's what's going to come out. But there's all kind of allegations which have not been denied that the British and American leaders agreed far in advance even of the attack that we would go to war against Iraq. And I don't think there's any doubt based on the--the--the public writings of the vice president and others even before George W. Bush was elected, we're going to go to war against Iraq. Because Bush Sr. should have removed Saddam Hussein from power. And so it wasn't 9/11 that precipitated the attack. This was a culmination of a long term plan, `We're going to attack Iraq. We're going to establish an American military base of a major character in the Middle East in Iraq, and then--and still--in--and in the process remove Saddam Hussein.' And I think that the claims that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and the claims that he had massive weapons of mass destruction that would threaten our country were manipulated at least to mislead the American people into going to war.

2. Carter is the perfect person to bring this out
MSM can't exactly ignore a former President. And it is obvious that Carter isn't going to run for office. Plus all the moral credit he's built up since he retired-his Habitat for Humanity work, work on making sure elections are fair around the world, etc, etc. Even the fact he's a professed Christian can't hurt-many of the Christians who were hoodwinked by Bush are looking at Carter now and wondering which one of them is really practicing Christianity.

3. I especiallly liked his bringing Reagan into it
I know he isn't very popular around here but Carter was trying to tell the Reagan Republicans "psst these guys are WAY different than you" or something to that effect.
