NYT is the LAST publication that should be printing stuff like this.
Remember That Mushroom Cloud?

The indictment of Lewis Libby on charges of lying to a grand jury about the outing of Valerie Wilson has focused attention on the lengths to which the Bush administration went in 2003 to try to distract the public from this central fact: American soldiers found a lot of things in Iraq, including a well-armed insurgency their bosses never anticipated, but they did not find weapons of mass destruction.

It's clear from the indictment that Vice President Dick Cheney and his staff formed the command bunker for this misdirection campaign. But there is a much larger issue than the question of what administration officials said about Iraq after the invasion - it's what they said about Iraq before the invasion. Senator Harry Reid, the minority leader, may have been grandstanding yesterday when he forced the Senate to hold a closed session on the Iraqi intelligence, but at least he gave the issue a much-needed push.

President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and George Tenet, to name a few leading figures, built support for the war by telling the world that Saddam Hussein was stockpiling chemical weapons, feverishly developing germ warfare devices and racing to build a nuclear bomb. Some of them, notably Mr. Cheney, the administration's doomsayer in chief, said Iraq had conspired with Al Qaeda and implied that Saddam Hussein was connected to 9/11.

2. Cache of weapons missing in Iraq 1 year + ago? I think we let the
guns and weapons be stolen by the rebels so that Cheney and Rumsfeld could have a perpetual war. They don't give a darn about our youth. Blow up a humvee or a helicopter? More money for them and their friends. Blow up a soldier - make them pay for their hospitalization and long term care. Take away the coupons of a widow. That's what it is for some. How can anyone NOT protest Cheney and Rumsfels war?prot and if no one protests the war and the loss of bodies - they will take away more.

In addition to profits from weapons and earth resources, Rumsfeld collects from Gilead for Avian flu virus fighters. What akind of spread is that? And 7.1 billion more - soon.

3. I'd add a paragraph to the piece:
and we here at the T*mes did our part to build the Administration's case. We were so proud that we had another Pulitzer prize winning writer here at the paper, certain that her credentials would sell a few papers here and there that we just let her do her own thing with no supervision.
It never dawned on us to check what she had to do to get that embedded spot with the military in Iraq. We knew she had contacts and assumed she just had breakfast here and a phone call there. We never paid attention when other writers insisted they didn't trust her and didn't want to by-line with her. We readily printed the stories she sent us.
Okay, we had to apologize for 4 of the 6, but we still didn't wake up.
Things got a little weird when our girl said that Fitzg was trying to get her to reveal her source on that story about the ambassador's wife. Of course, we knew we were standing on the right side of ethics when we championed our writer's commitment to protecting her source. Talk to her about what it was she was up to? No. We just signed the checks all the way to SCOTUS.
Let's add the name of the T*mes to the list of prominent names that built support for the war based on reinvented "facts."
