Ladies and Gentlemen of DU: CBS News Posts Bush Approval Rating: 35%
Poll: Approval Ratings Compared

Bush's low job approval is far below that of some of his two-term predecessors at this point in their second terms. In November 1985, President Reagan had a 65 percent approval rating, and Bill Clinton's job approval in November 1997 was 57 percent. Bush's rating is higher than Richard Nixon's was at the same point in his administration.

Both Reagan and Clinton endured scandals during their second terms. In January 1998, when facing questions about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, President Clinton's job approval ratings actually rose, reaching the low 70s, and remained at least in the 60s throughout the rest of that year. President Reagan's job approval rating dropped by more than 20 points to 46 percent in November 1986, just after public disclosures about the Iran-Contra scandal. During 1987 Reagan's approval rating hovered around 50 percent, but began to rise again in 1988. President Richard Nixon's approval rating fell as the Watergate scandal became public in the first half of 1973, and was at about 25 percent during 1974.

President Bush's approval rating has been experiencing a slow but steady decline since 2004.

Bush, Now

Approve 35%

Disapprove 57%

4. I never thought it would get that low
I thought high 30s was the basement, given the stubborn support of the far right. I wonder how this breaks down, his approval rating among Republicans? Must be 70% or slightly lower, which would be stunning

12. .... and we know why it will go lower.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 10:11 PM by Carney for Congress
The indictment is the latest evidence that President Bush has unfortunately surrounded himself with advisors more interested in damage control than in protecting America.

Perhaps more than in any other American conflict, the war on terror relies upon covert agents and human intelligence assets. To risk compromising these scarce assets is to risk another 9/11—or worse.

I am afraid that the legacy of the Bush presidency will be a disastrous politicization of America’s national security and a failure to secure our homeland.

If Congressional Republicans are truly interested in national security, they will put aside their talking points and investigate the damage done by these leaks. I hope they will spend more time worrying about defending our country than circling their partisan wagons.

We need new leadership in Washington–new leadership that understands that national security is not a political game, new leadership that will always put the security of the American people first.

Edited on Thu Nov-03-05 12:53 AM by Czolgosz

In raw numbers, Shrub may be higher than Nixon at this same stage in their respective debacles, but if you go back 4 years into each regime, Shrub started much higher and is falling at a much faster rate. Looks like he'll catch tricky Dick before too long.

19. This is the real reason why They Hate Clinton.
"when facing questions about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, President Clinton's job approval ratings actually rose, reaching the low 70s"

If not for term limits he would still be President today.

27. Bush went to Argentina today. I know the real reason!
He wants to go to a country that doesn't have an extradition agreement with the US.

He's scouting places to flee, like the old Nazis.

And yet, that 35% will bellow that the other 65% need to get out of America.

28. Since this is coming from CBS, whose own credibility rating s/b adjusted
by at least 5 points, my best guess is * popularity has finally hit his base, which would make it less than 30%.

Finally! It's been a long 5 years. But the best part is going to be watching the people * sneered and smirked at on their way up kick them on their way back down.

For the people of Iraq, for the people of the Gulf Coast, for the soldiers killed and their families, for everyone harmed by this administration:
