Cokie Roberts wants to dump the 22nd Amendment?
http://a.abcnews.com/podcast/051030thisweek_show.mp3

Watching 'This Week' was an interesting show, but I did a double take when I heard this comment from Cokie Roberts:

I wonder if we’re going to see either a return to some of the original loyalists like Karen Hughes coming back or the traditional thing we see in the second term which is reaching out to some other people like the Howard Baker model that Ronald Reagan did in his second term. Honest to God, this is really the best reason for the 22nd amendment not to exist limiting presidents to two terms because the minute they are elected to that second term everything starts to fall apart.

I thought I had heard things and I downloaded the podcast. The comment is about 27 minutes into the broadcast.

1. She's an embedded reporter too. I hope they don't truly start
pushing this more. The second they try to get a third term for *, I'm hitting the streets.

3. Cokie Roberts needs to be eliminated from public view. Someone
that incredibly stupid should have their jaw wired shut.

FDR's second term didn't fall apart Cokie. And he was a Dem. Maybe you rabid jackass republicans shits should find someone honest, competent, and this side of senile to run for office.

15. DC pundits should be "term limited" to 5 years of bloviation
I can't even begin to desribe how much I detest Roberts and her ilk. They are damaging this nation.

6. She's right.
We should limit them to one term. Bushitler and Reagan are the poster children for this idea.

16. it was hyperbole - good grief
I don't always agree with Cokie but I also recognize that just because she doesn't always agree with us doesn't necessarily make her queen of the neocons - after all, they hate her too.

I don't like how she's evolved in recent years, but she was not serious about the 22nd amendment; it was a rhetorical ploy.

8. Yeah, that has been going around the RW echo chamber for awhile
I started hearing it after the '04 election from various RW pundits. I noticed it was dropped when Bushboy started dropping like a rock in the polls.

And Cokie is just another RW whore who either hasn't gotten the memo to stop yet, or is just so in love with Bush that she can't bear the thought of him not in the WH.

9. I don't even know what to make of this.
Right-wingers say such stupid things that I often think I'm missing something in their statements. If she thinks that things start to fall apart in the second term then what the hell does she think a third term would accomplish?

I don't understand this reflexive opposition. It can work both ways, and does anyone really think Bush could possibly win another term?

With her there is no way of knowing. I haven't liked her for some time and I couldn't figure out if she was serious or it was an attempt at a joke. Maybe in the beltway it's a joke

The 22d amendment removes real accountability from the executive after the re-election.

Standing to be held accountable and being held accountable are different things entirely. Save your sarcasm until you understand that.

that's enough time to know if you've been lied to. Then a re-election. I was wondering how long it would take for the push to keep * in forever.

26. The Republicans pushed thru the 22nd Amendment
after FDR won a fourth term. They wanted to avoid having to deal with a parade of liberal presidents. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, they want to change the rules. Sounds typically Republican to me.

30. You want to really worry? There's already a bill that was introduced
in February to repeal the 22nd Amendment:

"Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the 22nd amendment to the Constitution. (Introduced in House)
HJ 24 IH "

<http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:H.J.RES.24.IH:>

The Summary and Status page shows "4/4/2005 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on the Constitution. "
