US admits keeping secret Iraqi tally
Email Print Normal font Large font By Oliver Poole, Baghdad
November 1, 2005

THE US military has conceded for the first time that it is keeping records of Iraqi deaths.

It estimates that 26,000 Iraqis have been killed or injured by insurgents since January last year.

The data, released in a report compiled by the Pentagon for the US Congress, says casualties, which include Iraqi police and soldiers as well as civilians, have risen from about 26 a day on January 1 to 64 a day in the lead-up to this month's constitutional referendum.

Attacks by insurgents have also tripled from under 200 a week at the start of 2004 to more than 650 now

This number sounds way too low.

1. 115000 killed by US is not included in 26000 killed by insurgents
:-(

even if accurate, it is only a partial tally....
It omits the civilian casualties during the invasion and the first year of occupation, and it omits civilians killed by Americans throughout the war. That would likely account for the greatest proportion of civilian deaths.

2. Wait wait wait... by *insurgents*?
What about by US forces too? Or do we blame insurgents for those either?

3. Well this is since 2004
Even if it is low - it does not account for 2003. Shock and Awe and the Mission Accomplished.

4. I thought I saw an independent report a few weeks back
that had the number much, much higher than that.
Anybody else remember that?

5. The Rub Is In The Wording
Note that the article says 26,000 have been killed or injured "by insurgents" since January 2004. So that's not the number killed by coalition forces - it's the number killed by the people we're fighting.

I cannot begin to imagine the number killed by coalition troops, considering the insurgent arsenal is lead by the IED, while we have missiles, tanks, and various other highly lethal devices that make IEDs look like frigging easy bake ovens.

IRON CLAD LOCK PREDICTION OF THE WEEK: Conservatives will beging using this number, sans the "by insurgents" disclaimer, to refute the 100,000 number that has been posited for over a year now.
