Just pointed out on Washington Journal. Back to the 14th century.

1. I don't see anything inherently wrong with that
And I think your characterization of Catholics is out of line.

The problem is that all 5 will have been nominated by Republicans, not that they're Catholics.

2. I agree with you. I am Catholic
and very pro choice, pro civil rights, etc. Catholics are like any other religion. You have mainstream Catholics, and you have wingnut catholics. Pat Robertson is Protestant. Does that make all Protestants wingnuts like him? I think not. JFK was Catholic too btw, and strongly believed in the separation of church and state.

4. The OP's characterization of Catholics is more reminiscent of 60s bigoted
criticism of JFK in 1960 than what I would expect in a progressive internet forum.

Kerry is a Catholic too, back to the 14th Century...geez

11. The real problem is 7 Republicans and only 2 Democrats
That is what is most troubling to me.

6. except the catholic religion itself is politically active
and has an agenda for the united states in all of us following its catholic law. so though you dont see a problem with it, i as a noncatholic do see a problem with it. if the catholics werent denying others the right to birthcontrol pills and other things they disapprove of because of their religion i wouldnt have a problem either. but they are denying women a drug that is legal and THEY are using THEIR religion as the reason for denying the women

10. Thank you.
Exactly my point. Call me bigoted. I don't care. This doctrine is what the anti-choice groups base their arguments on.

3. I think there is a lot wrong with 5 SJs being from any religious
demonination or sect. The Pope still has too much power over the masses of Catholics an the choice of the Constitution over excommunication is a huge one. And this is not flame bait so get off it. People will take early offense just to stop the debate but it shouldn't be allowed.

9. i think that can be. havent you seen how catholics have positioned
themselves to bring their religion into our politics. i have. and i have seen how the southern baptists have done the same. yes it SCARES me there are now 5 catholics on the court. and i am not a bigot with catholics. hubby and all his family catholic. all my friends have always been catholic. if kids decide to go back to church after being repelled to religion by the baptists, i am taking them to a catholic church. i would prefer catholics be honest what is happening with their religion so they could be part of the solution

7. Are Jews better? just wondering !
I don't understand why some people feel that because someone is Catholic, they are demons. I don't think one's religion has anything to do with what their qualifications are to be on the SC. If a comment was made about "5 Jew's on the SC" you'd be called anti-semitic...

You can't claim to be better than a right-winger if you talk like them!

13. The problem is that the majority of them were picked by Republicans.
Their religion is just a coincidence.

Most Catholics I know are Democrats. Including myself.

14. Locking
Members are welcome to discuss the religion of the nominee, and of the justices of the supreme court. But this post is based on bigoted assumptions about Catholics.
