What's your opinion of your local newspaper?
Both of mine are crap. I live in Cincinnati. On Saturday, Libby's indictment wasn't even on the front page.

1. Columbus Dispatch
Conservative, but relatively independant. They supported Shrub, but have no qualms printing anti-bush editorials

3. The Daily Disappointment?

That about sums it up. Some people say it's rightful name is the Oklahoman, but I think they're hallucinating.

The Tulsa World was, at one time, better, and I suppose it still is objectively speaking. But that's sort of like saying a cat pooping in your house is better than a dog doing it because one of them uses a box full of gravel. Still smells bad.

4. The Dallas Morning News is rightwing.
About what one would expect, but still unfortunate.

It isn't totally bad, however: e.g., opposes Proposition 2, the anti-gay-marriage amendment.

27. DMN will trash what TX repukes do and what laws they propose/pass..
BUT they faithfully endorse the bastards come Election Day.

Remember, this is the newspaper that made ROVE their Texan of the Year for 2004..they said that they would have nominated chimp again but he was the 2003 Texan of the Year.
You know who was on the list for them to pick from in 2004? Texas troops. They snubbed them to give the award to Rove. Let's hope someone REMINDS them of their "winner" once his ass is indicted.

5. LA TImes
Better than most, but far too right-wing. I'm going to stop my subscription as soon as I can compose a decent letter protesting the corruption of the integrity of the media that the LA Times is a part of. Specifically, I do not like the LA Times because, although it prints some article that is sensitive to real problems in a kind of sentimental, ineffective way every once in a while, it has taken Schwarzenegger's line in the November 8 Initiative election and it prints every bit of right-wing hogwash that the AP, the WP and the right-wing think tanks can shovel out. Interestingly, the letters to the editor, which reflect the opinions of the LA Times readers veer to the left in general. The LA Times, however, does not seem to care at all.

15. It cracks me up that so many think it's a lefty paper.
Have you noticed the dumbing down of the editorial section and the decrease in LTTEs?

21. Yes. And fewer reader contributions.
The letters to the editor and reader contributions on Saturday were my favorite items. They are gone and the editorials are becoming more and more conservative. I'm jumping ship.

8. The Daily Breeze ?

is a rightwing windbag tool.

The only reason we take the LA Times is so dh has something to read when he's in the latrine. He WAS reading the DB until I weaseled us out of subscribing. at least w/ the Times he is exposed to SOME objectivity.

that said, while he relied on the opinion section of the DB to tell him how to think, he never looks at the op/ed section of the Times.

I already told the Times they were too rightwing. the guy almost choked on his own spit when he heard that.

i get my news on AAR and right here on DU.

11. small town paper thats bullied into anti labor opinions
Its not that being pro business is bad for us but when the pro business opinions knock us down its bad. Every opinion theyve written about has been pro bush and anti Democratic. The readers are overwhelmingly Democrats from the heavily unionised east central Ohio valley , but the paper seems to be out of touch ,politically. They do just enough local stuff (police blotters, court news etc) to keep locals buying. I dont buy it but I read the online version once in a while.

They've been pretty relentless on Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski lately. The national columnists are about 50-50 liberal/conservative. A little something for everybody.

14. Yep... they aren't bad at all !
Actually, I'd give it more of a 70% liberal / 30% conservative..

We used to have two major papers here; the Anchorage Daily News and the Anchorage Times.. the Times was right wing all the way..

When the Anchorage Daily News bought out the Times, they made an agreement with them that would allow the Times to have a small (half page) commentary section every day. They don't always use it for political crap.. but they do enough..

The rest of the paper though is very cool !! My all time FAVORITE section is the "Anchorage Ear" which is in every Sunday's paper.. Blue_in_AK I'm sure would agree.. it's totally awesome!

19. Were you around back in the days when Sheila Toomey
was the crime reporter? You always could tell it was her writing within the first paragraph, even before seeing her byline. She has a flair. I do miss Mike Doogan, though, and even that old rascal Satch Carlson. He was so humorous -- too bad he had that little issue with his student. I love Alaska -- it's so gossipy, and our Republicans make such easy targets. :)

As for "Voice of the Times," I hardly ever go there. I used to get both papers back in the old days, but I always liked the Daily News the best.

...is a joke that purposefully tailors news stories to achieve a desired result. It's amazing what doesn't make it onto their pages.

They have played an active and overt role in Mobile, Alabama politics and economics for far too long.

It's actually the "Arizona Republic" but it might as well be called the "Arizona Republican".

The alternative is the Tribune, which is run by Mormans and is even MORE right wing.

29. Athens Banner Herald is a flimsy right wing rag...
particularly galling since the town is a liberal oasis in the middle of red Georgia. Part of a chain of 17 small southern newspapers owned by the Cox family. None of the papers make any money, but that's all right with the owners. They also have extensive real estate and investment holdings. Their pathetic papers just serve as soap boxs for bleating out the right wing message which benefits the wealthy.
It is truly a terrible and skimpy rag. "My Weekly Reader" has more content

30. Baltimore Sun is fish wrap most of the time.
Their politics are generally OK, but the quality of the reporting has gone continuously downhill since they stopped being locally owned. There is almost no in-house reporting of national or international news. The local coverage is decent, but not worth a subscription. I read it online, and would not pay if they switched to a pay site.

Alex "the Snake" Machaskee still holds a grudge against Clinton for sending troops to stop ethnic cleansing in Bosnia.

His co-editor is Sen. George Voinovich, who approves anything that appears on the LTTE page.

Pee Dee is expert at burying news or ignoring it completely.
