United Steelworkers of America, District 2 Endorses John Edwards
Wednesday January 28, 4:33 pm ET

TAYLOR, Mich., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Director Harry E. Lester announced today that the United Steelworkers of America, District 2, which represents over 75,000 active and retired Union members in Michigan and Wisconsin, has endorsed John Edwards in the February 7th Michigan Democratic Presidential Caucus.

Lester stated, "After careful consideration, our Union has determined that John Edwards is the candidate that best understands the critical issues that are facing America's working families. As the son of a textile worker, he has seen the devastation that unfair trade has brought upon entire industries."

4. This is great; Michigan's a big one, and it's soon
A powerful showing next Tuesday could seriously wake people up about him, and if he's doing well in all regions, that'll prove his contention of being best able to beat Junior EVERYWHERE.

10. Edwards ran in '98 on an anti-NAFTA platform.
Looks this union is going to reward him for that.

13. This could help him in OH too, though the steel industry
has been greatly weakened so not sure how many votes could ensue.

They also are angry with * about the import restriction issue with EU.

14. USWA should have endorsed Kucinich because Dennis voted against NAFTA
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 12:33 AM by IndianaGreen
I will remind DUers that the rank-and-file was never asked to vote on who to endorse. These endorsements are from the union's bureaucrats.

Socialism and the American working class

In the US, the struggles of the working class were betrayed by the bureaucracy that arose within the trade unions. The bureaucracy defended the capitalist system and politically subordinated the workers to American big business, primarily through its alliance with the Democratic Party. The betrayal of the AFL-CIO bureaucracy has led to the identification of the unions with corporate management and their transformation into instruments to suppress the working class, rather than defend it.

On edit: That's a great pic of Edwards, jenk.

16. Ku and Edwards are playing for same team, and both are
anti-NAFTA.

Furthermore, if the bureau's were making this decision, they would have gone with 3-term senator and member of the two most powerful Senate committees, Kerry.

17. It's about time unions started endorsing someone who is pro-labor
of the top candidates, Edwards is the most pro-labor. Kucinich is the best overall.

20. Congrads again on that endorsement
I know I support DK/Kerry but Edwards is a close 2. BTW I hear the AFL-CIO President John Sweeney likes Edwards alot, hard not to like Edwards, I find him very likable. I have Steelworker relatives, actually they are all gone now but this is great. USA is a great union, and Edwards should be pleased.
