I am convinced there is a delicate balance to nature.
Many years ago I worked on a construction project in the hills of Kentucky, putting power lines over the mountains. In order to get to most of the locations, we had to bulldoze roads to the mountain top. At the time, I was not as aware of the environment as I am now.

That same year, there was a flood, which the people called a 500-year flood. In hindsight, I think it was the damage that we did to the mountains, cutting the trees and the roads for the power company. I now believe that each tree that was bulldozed down was a small part in the balance of nature. Each one of them needed a certain amount of water to their roots and that the balance overall prevented flooding in the valleys.

But with so many trees cut down and roads that acted as ditches for water to run to the bottom, because water takes the path of least resistance, that is what caused the massive flooding in Southeastern Kentucky when Jimmy Carter was President. I am now convinced that each small tree is a delicate balance to man and nature.

1. every breath you take and step you make....
alters the balance. So the hard part is figuring out which elements of the overall, when changed, lead to good or bad results, which itself is a judgement on which not all may agree.

2. the mantra repeating in my thoughts:
as above, so below.
a tree's roots are as long as it is tall.

i lived through the Mt.St.Helen "volcano"...the landscape turned to shades of black, grey and white. it looked like armegedon. but what grew out of that was the most intense shades of green. it was indeed a pivotal change of perception for me.
