Anyone here of the Voter Information Guide from Sherman Oaks, Ca?
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 05:33 PM by still_one
I received this pamphlet in the mail, "Voter Information Guide" who gives their address as:

13701 Riverside Drive #604
Sherman Oaks, California 94123

Most of the issues they tell you to vote on would be what the Democratic party would normally endorse, except for three devious ones

Proposition 78 they tell you to vote YES, Proposition 79 they tell you to vote NO, and Proposition 80 they tell you to vote NO

The pharmeceutical companies are endorsing Proposition 78

Proposition 80 would try to roll back the deregulation that caused this state so much problems in 2001

I am voting the opposite of their recommendation on 78, 79 80. They also have pictures of democrats all over their pamphlet. I suspect big money is behind this group

They also do NOT give any phone number

Any insights would be appreciated

most of the issues that they endorse are anti-Arnold and I agree with, except for the last three. It implies to me that they are getting big bucks from pharma and energy. I believe deregulation was a disaster in this state. I will call them on Monday

Thanks again

3. Do you also vote on 73 and 74?
the teachers are against 74 because it makes it harder for them to get a permanant place, and they dont want that. They would rather slack off than improve the quality of teaching.

And 73 makes kids have to tell their parents they are getting an abortion. I dont have to say any more about that.

What is an abused child who is molested by a relative or parent suppossed to do?

Not all kids get along with their parents, and MOST medical professional are against 73, and rightfully so.

as for you interpretation that "teachers" would rather slack off, are you a teacher? They are on a 2 year probation under the current rules. If you cannot tell in two years if someone is going to make it or not, then forget it. The real problem in the educational system in California, is NOT the teachers, it is the top heavy administrators, and the parents who don't care what their kids are doing.

5. Actually, I am trying to be a teacher
And I think that if you had 5 years instead of 2 it would be better. Anyone can act nice, if its only for a few years. It also makes it easier for college professors who are on tenure to lose it if they don't teach well. I know many professors in college that once on tenure, they just give up, let TA's teach the class, etc., and there is nothing that we can do, since they are on tenure. According to one of my professors "Once you are on tenure, it takes an act of whoever you think god is to get rid of them". I don't think thats right. I have had many good professors, but some of the bad ones were on tenure. They just give up when they are permanent. Same thing can happen with normal teachers. I would rather have to wait a couple more years to become permanent than to have permanent teachers who have given up.

6. "No" on Prop. 77

I am just starting to look through all the info on the propositions. The one that seems most insidious is Prop. 77. Californians really have to PAY ATTENTION to this one. (It is about allowing three independent judges to redistrict the ENTIRE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.)

The most prevalent objection to this proposition is that if it passes, it will turn California into a red state. The "Yes" on Prop. 77 supporters, via their TV ads, are saying that they are just tired of politicians in general and that they want the judges to redraw the districts and then let the voters vote on it. (Knowing of course that if this really did happen, most Californians would stay away from the polls and redistricting could be done quite easily..... just another Republican power grab.)

The ads that advocate a "No" on Prop. 77 are quite interesting. For those of you who remember Judge Waptner from Peoples Court a few years back, he has made a commercial against Prop. 77 saying that it gives the judges TOO MUCH power. Their job is to interpret the law....NOT make it (says Wapner)

The second ad for "No on 77", is even better. It shows three retired judges measuring, outlining, and cutting up the state of California into small puzzle pieces and then trying to piece it all together. When they are finished, there is a very wide shot taken of the map, and the map of California has turned into a map of the state of Texas! Very powerful.

I'm going to vote no on 77....but people in other states need to pay attention also. If this passes in California.....there is a good chance the idea will come to your state as well. (That is if your politicians want to make a blue state into a red state).

9. I lived about two blocks from there
back in the early 90s -- also lived in TO and Santa Barbara during that time. I've lived in Atlanta since 93, so my memories of Sherman Oaks are a bit faded.

8. One of my Professors
Has taken to reading us the props in the last 5 minutes of class. She just reads them to us, and then explains what they mean a bit. She is a liberal, so I tend to agree with most of her views.
