What the Democratic Party stands for -- in 10 words or less
Everyone knows what the Republican Party stands for (or rather CLAIMS to stand for): smaller government, lower taxes, a strong military and moral values.

Here's the challenge --describe what the Democratic Party stands for (or ought to stand for) in ten words or less.

Here's my description:

Honest government.
Higher wages.
Strong alliances.
Equal opportunity.
Social security.

12. Honest and open government serving ordinary people, not wealthy elites
This requires, it seems to me:

Limiting the power of corporations and banning their influence over government.
Breaking up monopolies that distort the market and harm the economy.
A return to a progressive tax structure that limits extreme concentration of wealth and lessens the burden on the poor.
An honest electoral mechanism not controlled by partisans or corporate entities.
A free and independent press not intimidated by government.
Effective action against racist and other hate groups that advocate violation of the civil rights of others.
Limiting the power of the Executive branch, and in particular the power to make war without the consent of Congress and the people.

(among other things)

13. Higher Wages?
Tell that to all the people whose jobs have been outsourced by "Free Trade" Lovers in the Dem party.

Also, please tell the economically depressed workers whose jobs have been taken by illegal immigrants.

If you're against illegal migration, according to the Dems, you're a racist.

IMO, the Dems are no different than the Repugs, & that is why they have lost elections...they have deserted the working people of this country.

16. Well, if the Republicans can claim to stand for smaller government . . .
then the Democrats have every right to claim to stand for higher wages.

The fact is, that if it weren't for the Democrats, we wouldn't even have a mimimun wage. The current president believes the minimum wage should be voluntary. It's also the case that the Republicans have consistently blocked increases in the minimum wage by insisting that any increase be tied to far larger tax breaks for businesses.

Personally, I think the Democrats need to talk more about wages, because the contrast between the two parties is very clear. The Republicans tax about cutting taxes, but the truth (as anyone who saw Edwards campaign in 2004) is that the Republican really want to shift the tax burden from the wealthiest taxpayers, who earn investment income, to middle class taxpayers, who earn wages.

18. I agree with every word you have cited
to describe Republican beliefs & actions, or lack there of.

But the Dems have changed...sorry, they are no longer seen as the party of the working man.

CAFTA was the latest insult, with too many Dems backing this abomination.

21. Only 15 Democrats voted for CAFTA in the House
The House Democrats were as united against CAFTA as the House Republicans were united in favor of CAFTA. You seem to be applying a double standard.

34. True, there was a good fight in the House
but in the Senate, 10 Dems voted Yes for CAFTA.

The final vote was 54-45.

In both Houses, some Repubs crossed over. If the Dems had voted as a solid block, perhaps CAFTA could have been defeated in either the Senate or the House.

The Democratic party used to stand for ...

Freedom, liberty, opportunity, compassion, reason, patriotism, equality, charity, and honor.

Now?

Now it's too caught up in thought Nazis, who want every Democrat to believe as they believe. We will never be the majority party again as long as we have so many political snobs.
