I am a Concord wine Democrat
Actually, Zinfandel is the only true American grape variety. nevertheless, I plead guilty to drinking wine made from the noble and sturdy Concord grape (Mogen David on Shabbat).

The WaPo article about the cute label of Merlot Democrat being used to describe a "base" that sounds more like the DLC base should give everyone pause:

"The DNC has identified four critical segments of the U.S. electorate," this attendee wrote. "1. Merlot Democrats: We are the base."

Dean mentioned three other categories in this talk: "Patriotic Democrats," who often leave the party because of the Republican emphasis on moral values and the war on terrorism; "Regular Republicans," which is the other party's base; and "Backlash Republicans" who are troubled by the direction of the country and would, perhaps, vote Democratic.

No mention was made of other political subsets, such as "Dewar's Libertarians" and "Organic Syrah Greens."

Pollsters are much enraptured these days by catchy demographic categories. But some skeptics say choosing a French grape to describe the base of a party that has lost two straight presidential elections in part because of problems competing in middle America may lack a certain populist je ne sais quoi (meaning "I don't know what," for the French-impaired).

7. 'Gallo Hearty Burgundy Democrats'
I think Professor Moss said it best in the WaPo article:

"Identifying with a French red grape is indicative of being out of touch with America," said Mitchell Moss, a professor at New York University who has advised both Republicans and Democrats. "At least pick something more American, like 'Gallo Hearty Burgundy Democrats.' "

21. Croatia has been ruled out
For years vintners debated its origins and Croatia was on the short list. Recently, DNA fingerprinting has linked it to a relatively obscure Italian/southern Austrian varietal called Primitivo.

I'm a winemaker, too, and I make a very 'Big Zin' by removing 12 percent juice prior to fermenting to get a higher skin/juice ratio, and ferment at a high temperature than other red wines (a 24 hour spike at 100 degrees), but I've never tried brewing. Does brewing help?. ;)

23. Your skill level is beyond mine
I pick the grapes, let them sit on their skins for a week, press, and ferment. I don't have the equipment to regulate tempurature during fermentation. I will maybe adjust scidity and sugar if needed.

I knew about the primativo connection, but thought I had read that DNA said it was actually from the Balkans. Oh well...

I "brew" only in the sense that adding yeast (pasteur red) to grape juice is brewing.

Some day when I don't have a day job I can tend to my grapes properly.
