Kerry keeps giving South short shrift
By LEE BANDY
Staff Writer

Presidential candidate John Kerry can’t resist painting a scenario showing how Democrats can win the White House without the South.

The U.S. senator from Massachusetts has done it on at least three occasions. Each time it landed him in political hot water.

You’d think he would have learned.

Last March at a California fund-raiser far from the ears of Southerners — he thought — Kerry spelled out how he could lose all 11 states of the Old Confederacy and still beat President Bush next year.

1. Then it's only fitting they return the favor. Vote for a man who cares
about you folks: Wesley Clark.

2. Kerry is right
I think we should be pursuing a strategy that puts focus on states where there are a significant number of true swing voters. No matter how much effort we put into the South, Bush is gonna win it there (except Florida). We need to make an effort in true swing states like New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, West Virginia, and Florida.

Adjusting our message to bring in southern conservatives just hurts us everywhere else.

3. And again, you don't hear ...

... anyone from the Northeast, West Coast, Great Plains, Midwest or Southwest complain about wanting to be needed. Or is that "needing to be wanted"?

"The South. The South. the South! Why is it always about the South?"
