Kerry...Grass Roots?

January 28, 2004 NY Times
Kerry Finances Are Said to Improve Rapidly

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan. 27 — Even before the results were in on Tuesday night, officials at Senator John Kerry's campaign said their candidate's financial fortunes were rapidly improving this week as they scrambled to refill depleted coffers.

Louis B. Susman, the campaign's chief fund-raiser, said in an interview that the campaign had raised more than $1.1 million in the past week over the Internet alone. Mr. Susman said the overall total "far exceeds" that but would not cite specific figures.

In contrast to Dr. Dean, who has relied on small contributions collected over the Internet, Mr. Kerry has built his financial base largely on bigger donors reached through traditional fund-raising.
More than half of Mr. Kerry's contributions came from donors giving the maximum $2,000 through September of last year, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Only about 13 percent of Dr. Dean's money came from donors who gave the maximum contribution.

Candidates will not report their January finances to the Federal Election Commission until three weeks from now, making concrete analysis difficult

5. What does 'grass roots' mean anyway?

We heard so much about Dean's grass roots, but it turned out to be like a new lawn -- very fragile. Careful, don't step on it! Don't overwater! Don't underwater! Careful, don't overfertilize! Don't underfertilize!

In contrast, Kerry's grassroots have been growing for 30 years. People who were inspired by Kerry as a war-hero leader of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Constituents who rallied to his leadership as Asst. DA and Lt. Governor. Folks from Mass. and all over the country like me (I'm from Montana) who watched him in the Senate and thought: "if only we had a President like that". We know John Kerry doesn't back down, won't give up the fight, and neither will we.

6. grass roots in this case means
where your financial support is coming from

as the Times article points out...more than 50% of Kerry's contributions are from $2000 donations...compared to 13% of Dean's for example.

thanks for participating though...it was getting boring talking to myself...:)

13. Well, it was a rhetorical question.

The big factor here is that Kerry's internet fundraising is taking off! He raised more money online this week than any other candidate. Combine the big donors and the small donors and it adds up to: President Kerry.

9. Grass roots means a smaller average contribution?
I saw that on the latest Dean "bat", the average contribution was $57. I don't know the average Kerry contribution, but apparently it is much higher.

I guess I could give 200,000 1-cent contributions to Kerry to improve his grass roots stats.

Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 08:19 PM by windansea
for the Bushler...73% of donors are $2000...only 12% less than $200

for "I'll fight for you" Kerry it's 55% and 12%....

for "son of a mill worker" Edwards its 65% and 3%.....OUCH!!!

while Dean (13% and 56%) and Clark (31% and 35%)

sounds like Kerry and Edwards are supported by lots of fat cats

while Dean and Clark support is much more grass roots

isn't grass roots what democracy is all about??
