2. Odd. What is says instead...
"This space formerly linked to Democratic Underground is now linked to the campaign site for a real Democrat. Cynthia McKinney re-election fund."

I'm not that familiar with the site, but why not just add a link to the candidate?

in another section he calls DU a PC site (politically correct).

Just wondered if there was a particular incident or whether it was cumulative...just didn't like the current atmosphere here.

26. Censorship my butt
He's upset that DU doesn't permit his rantings to be posted here as "Latest News". His site has been determined (correctly IMNSHO) to lack the credibilty required to be considered "news".

That aint censorship, it's just common sense. If he wants to be taken seriously he needs to back up his pieces, not just make ridiculous claims and expect everyone to just believe him because he says so.

I believe elsewhere on this thread someone mentioned his Katrina fiasco. The one where he reported as "news" that police radios were being jammed from some transmitter out in the Atlantic somewhere. It was crap. Scientifically impossible, unsubstantiated, pure grade A horse offal. And yet it was posted in LBN at least half a dozen times as if it were real news.

Shutting down such threads (after this "news" was debunked of course) was just common sense. I don't know when the DU admin formally decided that his site is unacceptable as a news source but it is clearly the correct decision. I realize he has his fans here and that's fine but some standards have to be adhered to in LBN don't you think?

52. DU IS NOT for everyone!
DU is not intended for everyone to post. When a right-wing lunatic posts here, we censor. It's a site for progressives and doesn't pretend not to be. We come here to discuss things with like-minded people, because so many of us have to put up with (or argue with) Republican wingnuts all day. It's an oasis of liberal thought, like it or not.

39. I sometimes wonder if he's a RW operative pretending to
be a leftist in order to help to discredit and marginalize the left. The fact that he served in the National Security Council (NSA) during the Reagan Administration arouses my suspicions that he may be engaging in some sophisticated psyops activity. That's my own paranoid conspiracy theorist streak talking.

41. Cynthia McKinney
Cynthia McKinney seems to be an icon on DU and I'm curious as to why. Because she wasn't our representative - our district adjoined hers and for years we had to put up with some truly god-awful Republicans - I didn't pay close attention to her actions. However, I had a sense of someone who shoots from the hip, who didn't pay a whole lot of attention to her constituents.

My husband has warned me that this is going to get me in deep shit, and maybe so, but I'm genuinely curious as to what I'm missing.

I don't know about that.

I do know that when I have listened to her on the Floor of the House I agreed with "most everything" I have ever heard her say so far, anyhow. She seems very smart however I am not in her state so I don't know anything about that except that they brought her back.

Don't quite know what your husband thinks is going to cause trouble but good luck.

and I hope this thread does not end up mysteriously disappering, but it seems to me that open discussion of a particular story would seem one the best ways of resolving its validity, particularly if the facts in the story would be relatively easy to verify, no? It doesn't have to be posted in Latest Breaking News.

15. I'll go with a modicum of respect - more likely more - for Madsen -
I am amused/sadden by his making every Russian mafia person into a Jew - but he does have sources for interesting speculation.

I liked the email/mail cover and phone tap comment on his site. I felt like telling him that the kids running them are friendly, that they do not last long, and are painless - (except when they screw up service or ones changing billing plans) - but that he should have the equipment to know without "tips" when they are turned on.

I like his stuff - but there those on DU who warn to take him with extra grains of salt. Wayne should not let that get to him. God knows folks can be wrong - all of us last I looked.

12. Everyone except trolls who debunk should be allowed to speak here. If
people don't believe in 1/2 or 1/4 of what Madsen says, then they shouldn't quote him or they should skip right over him. At the same time perfectionists shouldn't limit the rest of us from 'pondering' what he writes and keeping it in the back of our minds to watch something unfold or not.

I get ticked off when someone accuses someone of being extreme while what we are doing by coming together here is observing and studying the most lethal extremism of lies, death, theft, and destruction - by people who are trying to take down our country and control the world. How can anyone criticize someone who goes out further than the others when the subject is people who have promised to screw our reality.

Talk about closed minds.

Come back, Madsen.

We should only be perfectionists about not doing the worst things that freepers do.

13. The only problem with Madsen is that he doesn't signal where facts end and
his own conclusions begin. Normal journalistic qualifiers like "may, possibly, seems to, sources say, apparently, in the past it's been seen," etc. just don't appear much in his work. He may think that gives his stories a veneer of certitude, but it weakens his credibility.

He's also not good at providing links, cites, and footnotes, which I suspect would largely lead to a Boolean loop back to his own, earlier work.

We have to thank him for the solid research he's done, but he's muddied his own good name too many times by reporting stuff that doesn't pan out.

17. Interesting
because "Normal journalistic qualifiers like "may, possibly, seems to, sources say, apparently, in the past it's been seen," etc. just don't appear much in his work." I find that he uses way too many of these qualifiers. In fact that is my problem with his stuff.

I agree with everything else you posted.

He doesn't like it here because there are some smart DUers who call him on his bullshit. I'd like to see some of those articles that people say he was right about ( and that are not just common knowledge) and where he has been PROVEN right.

For those unfamiliar with him, google his name and wade through some of his stuff. Did the US ( Bush) bomb Iran before the election? Did Marvin BUsh/CIA murder his babysitter? Did Clinton run drugs out of the Mena airport? Was there massive vote fraud in California? Were the Plame indictments handed down in July of 2004? Were Israeli spies behind the resignation of New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey?
My personal favorite is that Wes Clark isn't really from Arkansas, since he was born in Illinois and spent his first 4 years there, so he is really a mid-westerner, not a southerner.( ? stupid, I know, but it's the type of bunk he writes)

He doesn't like it here because there are a few of us who want a little more proof before we believe every kooky conspiracy on the internet.

Edited on Mon Oct-17-05 05:38 AM by WesDem
Madsen published that Witt had been responsible for NOLA's emergency preparedness and made millions off selling his plan, when Witt's plan, in truth, and sadly, was never accepted in the first place, never mind implemented. Even Madsen had to pull back on this one, but the article he wrote is plastered all over various "news" sites, without mention of any retraction by Madsen. The kind of site that happily carry inaccurate material just because it plays in with what their readership wants to hear. I'm glad DU uses some discretion about broadcasting false information and bearers of false information.

Edit: spelling

BUSH PRE-ELECTION STRIKE ON IRAN:
WHITE HOUSE INSIDERS REPORT "OCTOBER SURPRISE" IMMINENT

by Wayne Madsen
The URL of this article is:
http://globalresearch.ca/articles/MAD410A.html

According to White House and Washington Beltway insiders, the Bush administration, worried that it could lose the presidential election to Senator John F. Kerry, has initiated plans to launch a military strike on Iran's top Islamic leadership, its nuclear reactor at Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, and key nuclear targets throughout the country, including the main underground research site at Natanz in central Iran and another in Isfahan. Targets of the planned U.S. attack reportedly include mosques in Tehran, Qom, and Isfahan known by the U.S. to headquarter Iran's top mullahs.

The Iran attack plan was reportedly drawn up after internal polling indicated that if the Bush administration launched a so-called anti-terrorist attack on Iran some two weeks before the election, Bush would be assured of a landslide win against Kerry. Reports of a pre-emptive strike on Iran come amid concerns by a number of political observers that the Bush administration would concoct an "October Surprise" to influence the outcome of the presidential election..

According to White House sources, the USS John F. Kennedy was deployed to the Arabian Sea to coordinate the attack on Iran. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld discussed the Kennedy's role in the planned attack on Iran when he visited the ship in the Arabian Sea on October 9. Rumsfeld and defense ministers of U.S. coalition partners, including those of Albania, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Iraq, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mongolia, Poland, Qatar, Romania, and Ukraine briefly discussed a very "top level" view of potential dual-track military operations in Iran and Iraq in a special "war room" set up on board the aircraft carrier. America's primary ally in Iraq, the United Kingdom, did not attend the planning session because it reportedly disagrees with a military strike on Iran. London also suspects the U.S. wants to move British troops from Basra in southern Iraq to the Baghdad area to help put down an expected surge in Sh'ia violence in Sadr City and other Sh'ia areas in central Iraq when the U.S. attacks Iran as well as clear the way for a U.S. military strike across the Iraqi-Iranian border aimed at securing the huge Iranian oil installations in Abadan. U.S. allies South Korea, Australia, Kuwait, Jordan, Italy, Netherlands, and Japan were also left out of the USS John F. Kennedy planning discussions because of their reported opposition to any strike on Iran.

30. I don't mind speculative pieces, or even theoretical musings, provided
that the author makes it clear that's what's intended. Hell, I even posted a fantasy piece that the JCS have already decided that a coup (of a sort) is necessary to remove Dubya. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/9/11356/61794 Nobody would confuse that with a news article.

The same sort of framing is not always evident in Madsen's work. A couple months ago, at the height of the flooding in New Orleans, he reported as fact that the Louisiana National Guard had mutinied en masse in Iraq. I and some others here traced that story back to URUKNET, an Iraqi resistance site, and found it had been picked up by a no-name Russian internet site, whicg was Madsen's source. Yet, without any confirmation, the same story appeared at Madsen's site eight days after it was first put up by URUKNET with the qualifier that it was based on sketchy reports.

What can we say about someone who has so little regard for his own reputation? It really saddens me, and I almost want to believe that someone has been impersonating Wayne to discredit him. Hey, there's an article! Polishing my tin foil hat. :tinfoilhat:

Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 10:02 PM by Wrinkle_In_Time
... and not the other way around. Good for DU, IMO. That's one less source of spurious albatross poo that DU has to wear on its shirt.

Oh, and he also posts on Rense, which is a big, big mark against him in my book. If you feel otherwise, I have some quantum-level magnetically-energized spiritual harmonic unipolar qi enhancers to sell you. Do not be put off by their resemblance to ordinary paper clips: they have been blessed by the prophet Rachel and bathed in the soothing waters of the River of Life*. Honest**. There's also a 30-day money-back guarantee.***

*Offer void where prohibited.
**Not really.
***Shipping and handling excluded.

EDIT: Oh, and a big :headbang: to the people above who posted similar criticisms of Madsen's "work".

47. I have a story to tell...
My son moved out and was on his own, and he went to visit a buddy of his ..they were busy constructing a rocket...it blew up in my son's face, and took part of his thumb muscles when they fired it off...I got a call, while he was in the hospital, but I didn't know he was in the hospital..I thought he was calling from home...I never suspected a thing, UNTIL....his sister called me, a week or so later, and told me what happened...the moral of this story...HE took my choices away from me..for whatever reason, he felt it was necessary...I never got to make my own decisions about whether to send him flowers, visit, or anything else...because HE made the decison, for me...

I guess censorship is fine..and..I'm not criticizing the moderators, they have a job to do..and they do it, as they see fit, so who am I to criticize?...but...sometimes when I see it take place, it reminds me of my son making decisions for me..

48. How often
Does Madsen have to get stories wrong before people start asking questions about his credibility?

He had cast iron proof that the 2004 election was stolen. Proof that on closer inspection and based on the technical description of the theft was quite probably impossible.
The US Navy was blocking radio transmissions in the gulf during Hurricane Katrina. A feat that would have required a ridiculous amount of power to achieve and would have been noticed by a few other people around the world, like neighboring countries.

Those are two Madsen exclusives I can think of off the top of my head that have led me to believe that he's just making stuff up. Perhaps he is, as has been suggested, a right-wing plant who writes his stories well and makes people who believe him look foolish to many many people. Perhaps he's a dupe, he may be getting these stories in good faith and simply reporting them, but he's not exercising good judgment in his reporting and he's not properly checking his facts before he writes his articles. Whether that is by omission or by design I could not say.

53. Can you give me some examples of censored threads?
I'd really like to know. Nobody is being specific enough for anyone to judge if there's censorship or not.

56. An open mind is "a good thing" as Martha would say.
I love DU, but get tired of the "pc" meme that is pushed in many threads by people with an ax to grind or who think they have to be right or who have to have the last word. Sorry, but I really don't like anyone doing my thinking for me. :eyes:

The way I look at it all this stuff-and that includes all the conspiracy theories-is that it's ALL POSSIBLE! Because as we've all seen, the * cabal is capable of everything and anything!

So, until proven-without a doubt-that something is misinformation; then I reserve the right to believe that it's all possible and very possibly true....

59. Thank you!
Open mind and a Right To Decide things for Yourself!

If I don't care for a writer, guess what I don't read it & don't worry about it.

Also, let's make it clear I said nothing about the moderators except that they have a very hard job...
Saying I do not need a censor for me is not ridiculing anyone, just stating how I feel about it.
