Bush: "We put in motion something that can't be stopped..."
Bush Seeks to Rally U.S. Troops in Iraq

By TOM RAUM Associated Press Writer

http://www.salon.com/wire/ap/archive.html?wire=D8D76QHO0.html

October 13,2005 | WASHINGTON -- President Bush sought to rally U.S. troops in Iraq ahead of Saturday's vote on new constitution on Thursday, saying the "enemy understands that a free Iraq would be a blow to their vision."

"We put in motion something that can't be stopped, and that is the march of freedom," Bush said in a video conference with soldiers from the Army's 42nd Infantry Division, based in Tikrit, hometown of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Bush spoke two days before Iraqis vote on a new constitution. A compromise endorsed on Wednesday by the Iraqi parliament made key concessions to minority Sunni Arabs, increasing the chances that the document will be approved. Passage of the constitution would open the way to national elections in December.

"We're never going to back down, we're never going to give in, we'll never accept anything less than total victory," Bush said. "Thank you for all your work. When you get back to the United States, if I'm hanging around, come by and say hello."

:wtf:

The president engaged in a question and answer sessions with 10 servicemen and women, who he saw on a large video screen set up in a room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House. "Do the Iraqis want to fight, and are they capable of fighting?" he asked. He was told they were. And while polls show declining support for the war, Bush told the soldiers: "You've got tremendous support" among Americans.

6. It does bring to mind the image of a noose, doesn't it?
bush was trying to be cool with the troops, talking at their level. He sounds like the ingratiating little snot who used to bust into personal conversations in the school hallway with the phrase, "Heya, how's it hanging? Heh heh heh."

4. "When you get back to the United States, if I'm
hanging around, come by and say hello..." Unless, of course, you come home in a box and your family is pissed. Then don't send a proxy because I won't have time for them.

Could he be any more of an asshole?

9. So reminiscent of the late General Jack D. Ripper
General Ripper: Mandrake, I suppose it never occurred to you that while we're chatting here so enjoyably, a decision is being made by the President and the Joint Chiefs in the war room at the Pentagon. And when they realize there is no possibility of recalling the wing, there will be only one course of action open: total committment.

He's committing suicide, (Bush is) but he's determined to take us with him.

11. Freedom can't be handed to people, it needs to come from within
When Sadaam had most his military power ruined and sanctions crushing Iraq's economy, his people couldn't muster a coup d'etat. You would think that would be the time for an uprising with millions in the streets of Baghdad. Never happened. There was no unity in Iraq for any of that. The people never could get beyond either their fear or their apathy. If freedom isn't in your heart, it won't happen with an invasion and murdering of thousands. A full civil war will happen.....either it is happening now or could happen as soon as troops leave, whenever that is.

this Republic, its Constitution including the Bill of Rights, the fiscal integrity of the Federal government, international treaties, organizations, and goodwill, and the environment: yet, amazingly idolatrous throngs, in numbers far to large to comprehend, still chant, four more years, four more years.

18. People were scared.
Personally, I think the "throngs" were scared but are slowly waking up. Let's face it though..Bush didn't really win by all that much when taken into context of total election results. It was hardly a mandate - but they treat it as such. I just think alot of people, my best friend included, thought that since Bush started this war, he should see it through to the completion. Trouble is, this administration has been completely incompetent at everything. War, the economy, disaster managment, foreign affairs, federal budget, environment, dealing with poverty, job creation, etc..you name it, they have botched it big time. And it doesn't look like it's going to get better anytime soon.

21. Their competence lies solely in seizing control of all levers of power
and then emptying the treasury in the pockets of patrons, friends and cronies: these they are masters at but know little else.

17. As an American and a veteran...I absolutely despise this POS!
Shrubby is an embarassment as CIC. A chickenhawk who ran and hid when his country called on him is now sending our military to do his dirty work -- what he never had the balls to do himself.

How can our troops support this coward?

19. Don't think they all do.
They are a great many that don't..remember Paul Hackett in Ohio? Also it's very hard to speak out against the President while you are in Uniform. Think John Kerry..

He still has trouble about those days.

24. "as soon as troops leave"
There may be a drawdown befor the '06 Elelctions but the US Military will never entirely leave Iraq. Around 50K will be there for may years even if the Repubs lose the Presidency in '08.
