Poll: Groups Unhappy With Bush Performance
Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 10:23 PM by Roland99
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051008/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_ap_poll

WASHINGTON - Evangelicals, Republican women, Southerners and other critical groups in President Bush's political coalition are worried about the direction the nation is headed and disappointed with his performance, an AP-Ipsos poll found.

<...>

"Politically, this is very serious for the president," said James Thurber, a political scientist at American University. "If the base of his party has lost faith, that could spell trouble for his policy agenda and for the party generally."

Sentiment about the nation's direction has sunk to new depths at a time people are anxious about Iraq, the economy, gas prices and the management of billions of dollars being spent for recovery from the nation's worst natural disaster.

Only 28 percent say the country is headed in the right direction while two-thirds, 66 percent, say it is on the wrong track, the poll found.

A little cognitive dissonance on the part of the sheep? I didn't think they were capable of thought.

Better late than never but, hell, we knew what a disaster it
would be long before he was even "elected."

Now what, Chimp??

4. we have only one bushbot at my work

and she said to me last night, 'I'm so sick of Bush'. The woman only in the last few years learned of the VIETNAM antiwar protests, listens to hate radio all the time, so I doubt she will ever truly see the light but still....

and tonight my husb. the bushbot said he wants to buy gold because of all the debt the country is in AND AND AND he volunteered to come to a reception for the DEM candidate whose campaign i worked on this summer!!!

Where I work, there are those who are evangelicals who still
support the moron, as well as those who just inherited their
political affiliation from their parents (repuke) and still don't
question anything.

Fools.

What does it TAKE???

9. For how long?
It takes people willing to tell them Bush's crap. Most of the Bushbots I know are contained people who only surround themselves with other people who give a blind eye to what's really going on.

18. It's odd but some people act as if you're saying something rude
if you voice any criticism whatsoever about bushco. As if it's
"just not done." As if you're committing some sort of social
taboo. Who knows-- it could be they're so brainwashed that
they really believe it's unpatriotic (hah!) to critize "the
president."

I never could have imagined we had so many non-thinkers in
this country. It flabbergasts me.

12. I used to have a bushbot at home..
We had 2 signs in our yard in 2004, my Kerry/Edwards and his unmentionable... We would actually battle for the better position in terms of viewing from the street (he'd move his to the forefront, I'd notice and move mine ahead, etc.. Eventually we reached an equitable compromise (though I was still really inclined to douse his w/ gasoline and set it on fire...just kidding!)

We got lots of comments from neighbors on our battling signs (and I therefore got lots of opportunities to spread the pro-change gospel, which was cool. My neighborhood is 80% republican but I have many social friends who will actually listen to a well-reasoned argument.)

While my husband is still decidedly *not* a progressive or a liberal, he recently agrees with me that Bush is the WORST president ever... He is leaning more libertarian these days (but I continue to 'gently' work on him!)

Do you try with yours (to sway him) and if so, what works if anything? Looking for tips (beyond the obvious )
;)

19. sound like you and your husband have good senses of humor

when i say anything that even hints of DEM i can see him retreat to whatever he might have heard on talkradio or read on drudge... i can see in his eyes that he's reviewing their talking points. i wait a little bit and out they come: " fighting them over there, not over here'. must fight the COMMUNISTS!!! that is about when i gave up.

he's pro-choice. and solidly believes in evolution as truth, not theory. we both believe in God, ( I'm no longer practicing Catholic ) but we have no problems w/ evolution as science, religion as faith.

i am no psychologist, but i see adolescent rebellion in him ( his parents were SOLID Democrats ) even at his advanced age. he's one that will never change. as of this writing, he has a grandson who has just enlisted in the marines.

omg. i forgot one thing he said that started an all out war in this house. I mentioned the 1900 ( at the time ) of our soldiers who had died over there and he said, " well, they would have been dead anyway."

i think your husband will see the light; mine won't.

8. The 'seeming more moderate' comment is what scares me...
What disturbs me is the comment between the ***s below (not sure yet how to bold, will figure it out in due time)

"Bush is trying to get more support generally from the American public by *****seeming more moderate****** and showing he's a strong leader at the same time he has a rebellion within his own party," Thurber said. "The far right is starting to be very open about their claim that he's not a real conservative."

This language jumped out at me... Is bush trying to 'seem more moderate' with Miers? Is she really a stealth anti-abortion, fundie, gun loving SCOTUS nominee? No record so no opportunity to filibuster? Dobson's signaling today (I know more than you about her blah blah blah and she's OK) makes me very very nervous...

I am typically not a tinfoiler but something smells here.

And, yeah, I have no idea how * is being "more moderate" or even "seeming more moderate". He's not made one moderate move that I can remember.

13. I think he thinks he is 'seeming more moderate'
.. by nominating Mier who has no discernible record... but my point is that she is (seemingly, given the Dobson endorsement today) a stealth candidate who thinks (so to speak) exactly as he does in his fundie fog... More Roviasm..

Thanks for the welcome! I have been lurking here since the 2004 elections and finally got the urge to interact. And have read your posts with interest all the while.

14. Thanks. And, yeah, we see the Rovian move for what it is.
Esp. given Miers' pro-corporate bent. Wasn't that why Owens got her nomination?

17. Bush betrayed his base
The wealthy are his financial base, his overlords, but his political base is the rightwing, fundamentalist, anti-abortion, pro-hard right judges on the Supreme Court.

They are the ones who labored in the phone banks, identifying the voters, and getting them to the polls.

And they feel Bush has let them down. All this time they have worked just to get to this moment in time, and suddenly Bush doesn't name one of the people the right knew was one of its own.

I think he's broken faith with them, and they won't trust him again. Their dream of busting Roe v. Wade is probably over.

22. Bush
Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 04:39 PM by Aimah
At this point I don't think Bush cares. Anything he does now is to shore up his administration in history, line his pockets in the future and help his cronies with their agendas. Anything "seeming moderate" or liberal is just to get a "humanity" tag in the history books. He'll be known for death and destruction if he doesn't.

Thanks for the welcomes!
