Campaign to Stop Roy Moore
I am trying to promote the Campaign to Stop Roy Moore, headquartered at http://stoproy.com

As you may know, deposed "Ten Commandments Judge" Roy Moore recently announced his intentions to run for governor of Alabama. It is the belief of this grassroots campaign that American progressives across the nation must come together to vigorously oppose Roy Moore's candidacy. If Roy Moore is elected in Alabama, what is to stop him from setting his sights on the White House?

The fact is, unless we come together with one voice to show America that we are fiercely opposed to the theocratic aspirations of Roy Moore and his supporters, it can (and quite possibly will) happen. Enough is enough. Roy Moore was ejected from the bench for his refusal to honor the Constitution of the United States. Is the the type of man we want to see taking the oath to "protect and defend" that same constitution? Surely, even "George Bush's America" can do better. We need to say "NO" from day one, and we need to stand firm.

You can join us today in our efforts to honor the oath taken by every American president and upheld by every American citizen of good conscience. Help us "protect and defend" the U.S. Constitution from the ultra-conservative theocracy envisioned by candidates like Roy Moore. As unlikely as it may seem at first glance, we can rest assured that in the minds of our opponents, it is "first Alabama, then the world." Many of us never thought that someone like George W. Bush would ascend to the Presidency, but he did. Let it be a lesson to us - a lesson we choose to apply now.

Please consider doing whatever you can to promote the efforts of http://stoproy.com .

2. I sure hope you're wrong.
But given the political climate, I understand your position.

7. Welcome to DU, Roy-Stopper.
As weird as Alerbamer is, I don't think they will ever go for Roy. Still, a coalition against Roy is a good idea. Call my good Democratic friend, Steve Means, the mayor of Gadsden. He probably has this thing totally thought out. Tell Steve that Mac, the Auburn Knights bassman in 1966-67, sent you!

9. Thanks for the welcome
And I just might do that. If you happen to talk to him first, put in a good word for us. :)

As for Alabama not going for Moore, I hope you're right, but he's strong. Bob Riley is still hurting from his attempt to pass a progressive tax package. His constituency didn't care for that at all.

18. The Alabama Christians hated Riley's Christian relief bill!
After the referendum was defeated, Riley tried to stop all state business with the federal courts. Dr. D's biggest client is Alabama DOT and the 35 year old court case of Johnny ___ v. Alabama. The federal judge in Birmingham told Gov. Riley to pack sand.

21. They don't like Riley anyway
They resented Riley's view that helping the poor is the Christian thing to do. Riley fely that starting the state income tax burden at $4,600 a year was unfair to low-income Alabamians. Republicans getting ideas about fairness to low-income people is something that embarrasses Decent™ welfare and tax hating Christians.

A whole lot of Republicans (fundie and otherwise) are still mad at Riley over the attempted tax hike.

5. Doesn't Moore have to beat the incumbant Gov in the primaries?
That's got to be an uphill battle for any candidate.

8. He's very strong...
A January poll showed Moore up by 8 points in a hypothetical race with the incumbent, Bob Riley. Riley is weak because he tried to pass a mammoth tax increase that would have made any Democrat proud. His own party came out in droves to oppose him on it.

Frankly, I think it's an uphill battle for Bob Riley right now.

15. Roy Moore has yet to cover his internet bases
I posted this in the Alabama forum but I'll mention it here.

Moore has apparently not acquired domain names with his name in it. So, www.roymoore.org for instance can be purchased.

Should would be funny if someone were to buy that domain name and link it to DU.

16. roymoore.org is taken
It's registered by a "Sterling Davenport" and parked at Sedo, a free service for "domain squatters" - people who register notable domain names in hopes that they will be purchased for a profit.

If Roy (or anyone else) wants the .org, it's probably going to cost a chunk of change.

19. Depends on the price
The current owner probably speculates on domain names, and most likely registered this after the first big Roy Moore flap (the original registration date supports this). Likely, they are waiting for Moore himself to make a good offer. Failing that, they will look for an anti-Moore group to buy it.

I'd make an offer myself, but I've already invested more than I can afford, and a small offer would probably be turned down anyway. If the owner is an investor, they are probably hoping that Moore himself will make a sizeable offer to prevent the name from becoming another whitehouse.org, so I doubt it would be in my price range.

The worst that can happen is that they say no.

It seems that Google (the owners of Blogspot) have restored service.

I'm still dumping them for a better host, though. :)

Oh, if anyone from DU wants to be on staff (giving you the ability to make new blog entries), let me know. We're just getting started.

24. Roy Moore once called for the death penalty for homosexuals
He also strongly opposed changing Alabama's support of segregation in its state constitution a year or two ago, and voters there sided with him! He may be the one person in Alabama MORE conservative than former gov. Fob James. He's unstoppable in Alabama, but he'll never go any further.

26. With all of Bush's faults
(and he's had a lot!), he still was never viewed as totally out of the mainstream. Even today, Bush's views are not any more radical then the Republicans in Congress. Moore is far more to the right then all of them.
