Poll question: Please respond
After thinking about this, I think a major difference between the ReThuglicans and Democrats is this:

Democrats act to help the needy rather then preach.

And the ReThuglicans preach rather then act.

Like when you have a woman who gets pregnant, Dems want to act to make sure the woman has what she needs for the pregnancy but if the woman is a single poor one she is preached at and not helped by the ReThuglicans.

Dems generally do not preach at people but maybe we can just ask them to also be responsible? Like say to those in need: We will help but could you meet us half way?

1. actually
We do ask them to become more responsible and when we were in power we did setup in such a way so that when a person is down they can bring themselves back up again. Everybody needs help at some point in their lives, a lot of people found that out during the Katrina disaster.

Hopefully, we will be in power again and I hope that we will be able to offer some of the opportunities that we did before.

2. I agree with you
Personal responsibility is PART of the answer. Most poor people can do SOMETHING to not be poor. If nothing else, you can join the armed forces. A better idea before the war, I know, but you can still get a job and work your way through college if you want to. I know having 2 kids, getting hooked on drugs and dropping out of highschool won't help you escape poverty.

5. Agreed.
The goal of any welfare program should be individual and financial self - sufficiency. Welfare should be a means to this end, and if its not doing it, it should be reformed, not destroyed.

10. Molly Ivins said that 70% of welfare recipiants did what the program
was intended to do. Get on for a bit and then off after they had a chance to rebuild.

I would say that makes a program a success but then I am not a kick them when they are down person. Okay if it is the poor and needy...the horrible and powerful like Tom DeLay I rejoice in kicking.

I am a bad Christian but...

8. I agree and an occasional sorbet or mixed sorbet and
ice cream is good too.

Seriously, to give help and say would you meet us half way sounds like hitting them when they are down.

And making an assumption that they haven't already been giving it their best.

The system should be reworked so that effort is rewarded with a decent wage, so that everyone gets a decent educational opportunity, and a chance at a good job, life.

People will always have problems.

The big diff is do you have a rich, well connected daddy to help you out no matter how incompetent you are. Like *?

If you don't that certainly doesn't make you a lesser person, or a person of lesser integrity.

significant portion of its population working full-time to earn poverty with few or no benefits. Now even many of those jobs are in competition with sub-subsistence wages of the third world.

This can only get worse if things continue in the same direction.

All the inspirational Horatio Alger stories in the world cannot un do the reality that our current economy cannot function without this significant minority working for and living in poverty.

But when I'm depressed about it, I eat ice cream.

9. I am going to purchase some Ice Cream myself.
I know that the economy is geared towards this but there are steps to take to give the people on the lowest levels of society a life of dignity.
