If Intelligent Design Is True...
Why do people grow wisdom teeth?

Why do we have appendixes?

What's the deal with women's crazy reproductive systems?

Why are some people left-handed?

Why do we experience pain?

Why don't we live forever?

What possible good are mosquitos?

Why did the Designer think cancer was a good idea?

Why are there birth defects?

Why did the Designer program humans to kill each other?

Why is 90% of human DNA "junk"?

Feel free to add your own questions.

10. Here are the answers:
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 07:32 PM by brainshrub
Why do people grow wisdom teeth?

To know Jesus better.

Why do we have appendixes?

Because God wanted to be able to find all the organs quickly.

What's the deal with women's crazy reproductive systems?

Because sex is EVIL. Unless your married to a member of the opposite sex... in which case, sex is EVIL!

Why are some people left-handed?

Because Satan is a Liberal.

Why do we experience pain?

Because God is teaching us what hell will be like if we don't love him.

Why don't we live forever?

This one is easy! Helllllo! Have you read Genesis?

What possible good are mosquitos?

They remind us of Jesus shedding his blood on the cross.

Why did the Designer think cancer was a good idea?

It is a great idea if you are saved, because then you get to meet Jesus!

Why are there birth defects?

That's Satan's fault.

Why did the Designer program humans to kill each other?

That's the Republicans fault. Jesus says it's okay to kill if the people are brown and they have oil.

Why is 90% of human DNA "junk"?

It's not junk... there is no such thing as DNA!!!

###

Here's my question: Are you saved? Have you accepted Jay-sus as your savior?

14. Because ID isn't perfect, it is only the process toward perfection.
That would be a logically valid answer. Also, these questions and similar have already been "dealt with" by theists.

I don't think your questions are the best avenue toward showing the weaknesses of ID.

"Why did the Designer program humans to kill each other?"

On a side note, that statement is rubbish.

16. So vestigal limbs would not preclude intelligent design?
Horses have vestigal limbs which, because they evolved a single toe which has become their hoof, are now seen in the form of useless things like sesamoids, splint bones and chestnuts. To me, these are clear signs of evolution.

21. That's a clear sign of evolution to me too.
I was only supplying an inevitable answer that would be, and has been, given by an IDer.

My point was that this line of questioning isn't the best attack against ID. It's something to a certain degree on a certain level, but leaves a lot to be desired.
ok? :)

37. The whole argument is ridiculous. I cannot imagine what the
validity of Intelligent Design has to do with anything. There are many theories of how we got here. If we are going to allow ID to be taught or Creation...what about the ancient 'feet of clay' theory? What if a group of people support the theory that aliens brought us here as a race of slave workers and left us here when the atmospheric pressure changed causing them to develop raging sinus trouble?

So no matter what they say to 'prove' their point is beside the point. The point is, as I said further down, it is NOT science. It does not belong in a science class.

23. You mean cockroaches?
Cockroaches: indestructible, fast breeding, eat anything.

And rats.

Viruses might be the most perfect of all.

Fact is, "perfection" isn't defined any more than "intelligence" or "design".

All one can say is that the designer has an intelligence that surpasseth understanding---which is a religious, not a scientific, statement. And that's why ID isn't science.

My questions were meant to be funny, mostly--but apparently I should've added a "smiley" to make sure that was clear to everyone. And humans seem to be programmed to kill each other in large numbers and with great frequency. Hadn't you noticed?

"And humans seem to be programmed to kill each other in large numbers and with great frequency. Hadn't you noticed?"

You're mistaking our culture for humanity. They aren't the same.
It bugs me when humans claim that human nature is flawed as opposed to our culture being flawed.

If killing each other in large numbers with great frequency was a biological trait of any animal, that animal's numbers would never increase, and they certainly wouldn't survive for 3 million years as humanity has. :)

43. "Our culture" is not some innate human trait.
Your statement that humans seem to be programmed to kill each other in great numbers and with great frequency is hoogeymoogey.
And notice that you aren't talking about individual humans, you are talking about group against group. That's a culture war, not an inevitable result of being human.

What I said stands, and don't call me honey.

46. What you said is just plain goofy.
Culture is the ultimate manifestion of all that is human. Humans have killed each other in large (and small) numbers and with great frequency throughout history and across cultures. War and murder are demonstrably, though not uniquely, human. They even wrote about it in the Bible, for cryin' out loud.

Not crazy about honey, eh? Is it okay if I call you sweet-cheeks?

If you think OUR CULTURE is the ultimate manifestation of all that is human, you have unwittingly bought into a mythology.

49. People kill each other in every culture.
And if by "our culture" you mean American culture, it is indeed a manifestation of our (Americans') natures--even the corporate, commercial and political parts I don't particularly like. Unless you're off the grid entirely, you participate in those aspects of our culture every day--which makes you complicit. No culture is entirely bottom-up or top-down (pluralistic or heirarchical); it's a mistake to conflate culture and political systems. Cultures all work both ways, to varying degrees. You should really take an anthropology class sometime. Or read some Lao Tzu.

53. I never asserted that they didn't.
You said "humans seem to be programmed to kill each other in large numbers and with great frequency." It is you who could use an anthropology class.
As a rule, humans are no more dangerous to each other than sharks are to each other. However in our culture, it is a matter of policy to destroy the competition, within and without the culture, and across species lines. It is a policy because in "our culture" there is a central myth that we are the ultimate manifestation of humanity. That is pure mythology, devoid of science. It is because you are under the spell of this mythology that you single out humans from the animal kingdom as somehow being flawed. That's an assertion of salvationist religion, not an assertion of science.

And no, by "our culture", I don't mean "American culture." I mean the 10,000 year old culture that you equate with humanity writ large, but which is not.

Can we wrap up this tangent by agreeing on whether ID blows or not? I think it blows.

And as such has not place in a SCIENCE class. Neither does creation. Creation is religion and belongs in Sunday School. If the religious right insists on forcing their religion into my school, then why can't I force my science into their Bible Study class?

It's not based on logical reasoning. It's based on a pathological desire to subvert science to whimsy.
It could be called a philosophy of a sort, but it would be one devoid of any content other than the pricetag on the cover.

47. Why can sharks grow new teeth when humans can't?
I mean, it's a bit of an oversight isn't it? A human will have a single set of milk teeth and usually a single set of permanent teeth (some people have had a 3rd set of teeth grow through).

Having designed sharks mouths so they could grow thousands of replacement teeth if required surely the Designer would have implemented the change in other animals.

As someone who has recently required a crown on a tooth I have to think that if there is a Designer out there then they're surely not that intelligent.

Now, where's that shark DNA?
