Bush's failed mission to capture Iraqi oil...
It has long been an article of faith among America's senior policymakers - Democrats and Republicans alike - that military force is an effective tool for ensuring control over foreign sources of oil.

1. Well, where's the Iraqi oil revenue gone in the meantime?
2 million barrels of Iraqi oil pumped every day at $67 per barrel = $134 million dollars revenue daily.

SOMEONE'S getting richer by the minute.

4. Fantastically failed! Now we have lost Iraqi oil, Iranian oil, Venezuelan
oil, Caspian Sea oil/gas, future Cuban oil, even Canadian oil. And since God apparently has felt the need to intervene in the Gulf to stop this monster's war machine, we even lost our own oil.

6. The goal is to control the oil not to "get" it
as long as American troops are stationed in Iraq, the government in Baghdad will not be completely free to act with regard to pumping volumes, prices, and destinations as they would naturally wish to be. The Bushco people hope that whatever government exists in Baghdad would always be too afraid of its own people to demand the US forces depart entirely, thus leaving us with a veto authority over their oil and OPEC policy. And as long as we are there in a force of 3 or 5 thousand or more this control is still in effect.

Will SCIRI and Dawa parties demand the removal of every uniformed American? Certainly their rank and file membership thinks in these absolute terms, but it's not clear that the party leadership are so anxious for the main prop of their power to be pulled out from under them. What will they do about mounting Sunni guerilla warfare/terrorism without Americans? What would they do about a separatist Kurdish northern province? There are many ways for American troops to remain stationed in the country and I will be surprised to hear the grand poohbahs in Baghdad start to angrily demand their complete and immediate withdrawal. As long there are any troop levels of the kind the Pentagon would insist on retaining America will remain in virtual control of what Iraq can do with its oil--how much/little it will pump, what it will say in OPEC, who it will sell to, etc.
