TIGARD, Ore. Sept. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Ken Mehlman, today addressed dozens of Hispanic business and community leaders during a "Conversations With The Community" roundtable, as a kickoff to what will be a month of on-going events the RNC will host to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.

During the hour-long roundtable discussion Chairman Mehlman championed President Bush's broad agenda to expand opportunity for all Americans including record Hispanic American homeownership numbers, strengthening Social Security for future generations, ensuring equal opportunity in education, and providing tax relief for families.

"What better time to celebrate how Republican policies are empowering Latino Americans, than the start of Hispanic Heritage month, when Americans celebrate the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Latin American and Caribbean countries. It is an opportunity not only to celebrate America's cultural diversity but also the achievements and contributions of Hispanics in our homeland," Chairman Mehlman said.

Sept. 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. During today's outreach event, Chairman Mehlman announced a number of events he will take part in over the course of the month, which include a meeting with the RNC Hispanic Advisory Committee, reception with Hispanic leaders, an online web chat, and pen and pad briefing with Hispanic press.

George Puentes, president of Don Poncho Authentic Mexican Foods in Oregon, praised Chairman Mehlman's efforts. "As we enter Hispanic Heritage Month, it is important for Hispanics of different political backgrounds to come together to listen and share ideas for the betterment of all Hispanics. This historic visit by Chairman Mehlman with the Latino community in the Northwest, to discuss our shared traditional values of faith, family, hard work, and patriotism is indicative of how important Hispanics have become and how much influence we can have if we work together," Puentes said.

Chairman Mehlman has participated in twelve "Conversations With The Community" since February. While in the Beaver State today, Chairman Mehlman also participated in a closed press grassroots event, a meet and greet with Microsoft employees, and a fundraiser for the Oregon State Republican Party.

1. Just wait until California's next big earthquake and they evacuate all the
poverty level Hispanics to some refuge center in the desert without food and water for a week. Then Bush shows up after they lose about 1000 or so people and he tries to tell them in broken Spanish how his heart goes out to them and he is doing all he can to help them.
