Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) A puzzling hypocrite
Sen. Coburn

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), following Sen. Brownback, choked back tears as he gave his statement.

My heart aches for less divisiveness," he said, his voice quavering, "less polarization, less finger-pointing, less bitterness, less partisanship."

He said his concern was primarily about "judicial activism" which has "created these huge rifts in the social fabric of the country ... It's a tension pulling us apart" rather than bringing us together.

I believe it's time that it's stopped."

Coburn said he was "deeply heartened" by statements by Roberts about "a more proper role for the judiciary."

Our family structures have declined.
.....................................................
Here is what he REALLY means:

"The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power. ... That agenda is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today. Why do you think we see the rationalization for abortion and multiple sexual partners? That's a gay agenda.'"

Stiff upper lip, Tom, and get that puzzle done!

Yeah, that's a crossword puzzle.

1. No puzzle about it...
... let's not ask questions about sensitive issues, because our ringer will have to lie in his nomination hearing....

2. That idiot replaced Mike Synar on OUTSIDE the state money.
F-ing NRA!!!

Somebody needs to explan that rejecting legal precedent IS ACTIVISM. Their judges want to pretend that Roe V. Wade and a bunch of other legal principals never happened. No "stare decisis" - that's Activism.

4. Coburn is dangerous. Very dangerous.
Unlike Bush, Cheney, et al, he may actually believe the Fascist crap he emotes. That's scary. We don't need Coburn telling us how to think, feel and run our lives. And that's exactly what he wants to do.

I cried almost as hard for OK when he won asfor our country and the rest of the world when * "won."

Here's more about Freak Coburn:

--He is quoted as saying that "Lesbianism is so rampant in some of the schools in southeast Oklahoma that they'll only let one girl go to the bathroom. Now think about it. Think about that issue. How is it that that's happened to us?" http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2004/10/11/politics2023EDT0704.DTL

--He is on record as stating that he believes most Cherokee "aren't Indians." http://www.cherokee.org/NewsArchives/announcements/2004-Coburn-Altus.asp

--He believes that silicone breast implants make women HEALTHIER.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A3130-2005Feb6.html

--He favors the death penalty for "abortionists and other people who take life."
http://www.news-star.com/stories/091004/New_40.shtml

--He opposes abortion even in the case of rape, although he himself admits to performing 2 abortions: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6542344/site/newsweek/

--He was accused of Medicaid fraud in at least the case below.

--He was sued in 1991 for malpractice after allegedly sterilizing a woman without her consent.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2004/09/15/politics1542EDT0689.DTL

--During the senate race last year, here's how he responded to some of the allegations:

"In an interview yesterday, Coburn denied that he had committed fraud or malpractice and accused his Democratic opponent, Rep. Brad Carson, of leaking the details of the case to the "liberal" Internet publication." http://noozy.net/go?97920

8. Thanks for these. He IS nuts. And this is who is elected?
I am frightened. And energized. Coburn is nuts. But, this Administration does not care about this Religious Right crap, except for how they ignorantly support their Move For Power. Coburn is indeed nuts. If he gets out of hand, he will be eliminated. Like Judge Roy Moore, another nut who has dared to challenge Rove.

10. straight ticket voters put this guy into the Senate
The only way I can make ANY sense out of HOW Coburn beat Brad Carson is the straight ticket voter phenomenon. As an election judge in Texas, I saw it up close and personal last November. People are so focused on the top of the ticket and they don't want to bother with marking all those individual slots on the ballot. (Lots of befuddled voters BROUGHT me their ballots with questions. Whites tended to vote straight GOP, and blacks, God Bless 'Em, tended to vote straight Democrat.)

Next time, if we can actually get a Presidential nominee that has some real traction in Red State territory, down-the-ballot, grassroots Democrats MIGHT have a sporting chance.

12. Phew...I thought I was the only one who noticed that!
I've also noticed that every time he is presiding over the Senate and has to use the gavel, so the CSPAN cameras zoom in on him, he always has a crossword puzzle then too. Does he ever do any work.

17. Coburn's just trying to score with his crossword puzzle....
I read this article in Maxim magazine a while back that suggested that guys take the newspaper crossword puzzle with them to the bar, or coffee house or whatever as a vehicle to hit on smart women. Haven't tried it yet, so I can't speak to the validity of the approach, but maybe Tom's just trying to get laid? There's gotta be some single repressed right wing Republican women in those hearings, right?

Oklahoma: Gays are Greatest Threat to American Freedom
Who represents the greatest threat to American freedom today? Islamic terrorists? Overzealous government officials trying to protect us? No! It's the gays and their nasty desire to get married! At least, that's what former U.S. Representative (and current Senate candidate) Tom Coburn tells us.

The Oklahoma Democrat explains:

One of Coburn’s key concerns (one might say obsessions) is his vow to make abortion illegal, even in cases of rape. So strong are the feelings of this obstetrician-gynecologist that he recently told an AP reporter, “I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life.” Executing doctors who perform legal abortions? He later clarified his remark saying, “… I was not referring to current law.” Carson believes women, their families and their doctors ought to make this personal decision largely without the intervention of government.

Watch out for the gay menace! They’ve infiltrated everywhere! Check under your bed — and, in the cases of raging homophobes like Coburn, you better check your closets as well. There’s likely a gay in there as well

http://www.bubbaworld.com/coburn.html

Example #1:

Dr. Coburn proudly proclaims he is 'pro-life' and that 'all life is sacred'.
He also advocates the death penalty for abortionists.

As a family practice and Gyn physician Dr. Coburn admits he has performed abortions.
Evidently Dr. Coburn has no problem with claiming 'all life is sacred' even while advocating the death penalty for those that perform abortions

Example #2:

While representing Oklahoma's 2nd District in Congress in Coburn protested NBC's airing of the historically significant movie "Schindler's List". Coburn said in airing the movie NBC had taken television "to an all-time low, with full-frontal nudity, violence and profanity". He also said the broadcast should outrage parents and decent-minded individuals everywhere.

Conservative super-stars William Bennett and Jack Kemp took Coburn to task for those remarks, with Kemp calling Coburn's remarks "a huge mistake" and Bennett calling them "very unfortunate and foolish".

Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, Republican Senator from New York said of Coburn:

"To equate the nudity of Holocaust victims in the concentration camps with any sexual connotation is outrageous and offensive. I'm particularly embarrassed they were made by a member of my own party."
