RWers debunk their own claim that Gov. Blanco/LA NG denied Red Cross entry
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 12:54 PM by Roland99
There's been a common theme from right-wingers that the Gov. ordered the LA National Guard to bar the Red Cross from entering the city to provide aid.

In fact, they use this Hugh Hewitt interview of a Maj. Garrett (a right-wing hack):

http://www.radioblogger.com/#000967

MG: The answer is the Louisiana Department of Homeland Security, that is the state agency responsible for that state's homeland security, told the Red Cross explicitly, you cannot come.

HH: Now Major Garrett, on what day did they block the delivery? Do you know specifically?

MG: I am told by the Red Cross, immediately after the storm passed.

HH: Okay, so that would be on Monday afternoon.

MG: That would have been Monday or Tuesday. The exact time, the hour, I don't have. But clearly, they had an evacuee situation at the Superdome, and of course, people gravitated to the convention center on an ad hoc basis. They sort of invented that as another place to go, because they couldn't stand the conditions at the Superdome.

Well, see how Maj. Garrett dodges and evades pinning down an exact time? And, notice how he creates some reason why people ended up at the Conv. Ctr (because they couldn't stand it at the Superdome)? What a POS!

Well, look at this CNN article a RWer tried to use to bolster his case:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/07/news.update/index.html

American Red Cross officials twice asked to be allowed to enter New Orleans with relief supplies late last week after the city was savaged by Hurricane Katrina, but they were asked not to do so by state officials concerned about the logistical difficulties of such an operation, Red Cross and state officials said Thursday.

Vic Howell, chief executive officer of the Red Cross' Louisiana Capital Area Chapter, said the request was first made on Thursday during a visit to the state by the national president of the American Red Cross, Marsha Evans.

He said he then renewed that request on Friday to Col. Jay Mayeaux, the deputy director of the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

Well, now. Thur./Fri. are a far cry from Mon./Tue. aren't they, Maj. Garrett?

And, as we all know, by Thur./Fri., FEMA was in full-bore denial-of-aid mode:

So...use this to debunk that ridiculous claim that the state was preventing the Red Cross in. FEMA was directing operations at that point.

2. First of all, this dumbass Hewitt thinks that Garrett is an actual MAJOR
...Which he's not. Major Garrett is the guy's name, not a title. He's a FAUX News "reporter".

7. On Friday night the head of the Red Cross said that the reason they were
not in the city was because it was too dangerous. She said that there mission was emergency shelter and that they could not set that up. She never said anything about any government telling them they could or could not set up in NOLA.
