CNO directed US naval ships to gulf coast - ON HIS OWN INITIATIVE
Did I hear Rep. Kirk (Rethug, Illinois 10) - http://www.house.gov/kirk/ - just a few minutes ago, on the House floor, during the gulf coast supplemental funding authorization debate, say words to the effect "...I want to commend the CNO (chief of naval operations) for sending, on his own initiative, US naval ships to the affected area...".

Not General Peter Pace, Chair of the Joint Chiefs
Not Rummy
Not *

A man about 5th or 6th down the chain of command!

======

Perhaps a member of Rep. Kirk's district can call a district office and get confirmation. For anyone who has interest, this will be in Thomas Tuesday (I'm heading out).

3. better to ask forgiveness
than permission.

sometimes, when there is inaction, and the course of action is painfully obvious, you make it happen. fuck the chain of command.

i'm sure that he won't be court-martialed for this.

6. I believe this is within his command authority
If a ship is in an operational area (oparea), it us totally within the rights of the CNO to direct it anywhere he deems necessary. Kind of like an air traffic controller can direct a commercial plain, within established limits.

I'm sure CNO informed his bosses after taking action.

20. No, not if you play it right
You send them off on an exercise, and halfway there, once you get the blessings from the assholes at the Pentagon, you change their orders. I know the new CNO, and he is a good guy--tough fucker, very, very savvy, knows how to wend his way through political minefields, and extremely pragmatic. Better than the last one, for sure.

I'll bet there is leftover cash that needs spending by SEP 30 (end of FY). Sure, some commands won't get those new safety shoes or office furniture, but it's all to the good.

Members of the House have 5 days to amend and revise their statements, I want to be sure the speech is captured in its original format before Rove and crew have a chance to flush this down the memory hole.

I'm going away for a few days.

Later today, or certainly by Tuesday, Kirk's words will be in Thomas.

Go to http://thomas.loc.gov/home/r109query.html, filter on today's day and member's name.

See what the transcript reads.

thanks

23. No, Chimp picked him
CNO probably moved those vessels when they told him they were taking Bataan away from NOLA and taking care of Biloxi.

Chimp cannot fire him without looking like he has bad judgment, and it is a set term.

We don't believe much from the Republicans in general so who knows. However if Rep. Kirk's Freudian Slips are showing, then we need to know pronto.

Great post and looking forward to the answer.

25. This wouldn't surprise me
Apparently he is old school Navy.

I've been asking WHERE IS THE NAVY?

Thank you so much for posting this.

My dad was career Navy -- and I grew up expecting the Navy to be out there helping in the aftermath of disasters. I don't know how many times my dad went out to rescue & aid in disasters -- flooding etc.

What we have witnessed is a complete lack of leadership at the top.

32. Who ordered the military helicopters not to drop sandbags?
The Mayor said that the military helicopters had been ordered not to drop sandbags. This occurred soon after the breech had been discovered and before the city had flooded. Who gave the order and why?

This was not the will of the civilian authorities in Louisiana.
