Dean: Roosevelt and Truman Had a Plan to Win WWII; Bush Needs Plan for Iraq

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement on the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, praising the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation to win that war and calling on President Bush to follow the model of his predecessors to lay out and stick to a clear plan for victory:

"Democratic Presidents Roosevelt and Truman led America to victory in World War II because they laid out a clear plan for success to the American people, America's allies and America's troops. President Bush has failed to put together a plan, so despite the bravery and sacrifice of our troops, we are not making the progress that we should be in Iraq. The troops, our allies and the American people deserve better leadership from our Commander in Chief. In fact, President Truman made this very clear: the buck stops at the Oval Office. Who knows where the buck stops in the Bush White House?

"Today, on the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, we recognize the sacrifices our Greatest Generation made to rid the world of fascism and tyranny, and extend freedom. Sixteen million Americans served their country, leaving behind their families and their jobs to serve our country. Four hundred thousand of these brave Americans lost their lives. Millions more Americans worked here at home to support the war effort, working in factories, caring for veterans and doing all they could to aid the allies to victory. We owe the Greatest Generation our gratitude as we owe all of our service members, veterans and their families for the sacrifices they make on our behalf every day.

"Today, Democrats also renew our commitment to standing up for America's veterans and our troops in Iraq. We stand dedicated to making sure our troops in combat, wherever they find themselves in harm's way, have the equipment and resources they need to get the job done. We will also work to make sure they and their families receive the medical care and benefits they've earned; it's the least we can do to honor their sacrifices."

2. In order to get a plan, Bush would have to admit
that his current plan ("Stay the course, stay the course, stay the course") is not working.

Bush doesn't admit mistakes.

4. I Support Dean Again
Unfortunately, this announcement came out right at the time of this unprecedented disaster, the worst hurricane ever to have hit the Continental U.S., I have been hearing confirmed, and if it had been released at any other time, it would've gotten a decent amount of attention, as it deserved. Democrats have to make more of a point of what a clueless fuck-up Bush is, that everything has been happening this same way--no plan, all fantasy-world "thinking," all deregulation, all disaster, and attacks on anyone who refers to it--from Iraq to "No Child Left Behind," everything this Administration has done has been a total mess, and a fraud.

Contrast this with any well-run Government, and Roosevelt and Truman were two of the best, and you realize what a heartbreak it all is. The only thing I would criticize about the way this press release was worded, was the way it described the efforts of the people at home, during World War II, as if all they did was wait, and "do all they could," etc. This was my Mom's generation, and I was always very aware of how they all pitched in to win the war. There was a lot of deprivation, as people here tried not to use materials at all so they could go to the armed forces: there were rubber drives, aluminum drives, other materials melted down and used again; there was food and gas rationing, (just about the only publicly available reference to these activities still remaining is during a part of the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life," a great anti-corporate, pro-society story that never would've been made today); many other things of this type. People were encouraged to grow their own produce in "Victory Gardens" so commercial produce could always be available to the troops (compare that to Bush, Cheney and Halliburton!), and at one point one-third of all produce grown in the U.S. came from Victory Gardens. These were great people.

My uncle, a farmer, could not get a desperately needed part for a tractor, despite the fact that farm work was classified as "essential," for four years, until the end of the war. People raised money for U.S. War Bonds, served at the USO and other organizations for the morale and support of the soldiers, etc.--it was non-stop. We as Americans were one people once...

6. They were also battling fascist imperialism (often to the great
consternation of the corporatocracy) rather than expanding it to the great delight of the corporatocracy.

Whatever plan you have, unless it's a plan to actually allow people to control their own desitnies and benefit from their own work and resources, it's not going to work out well.

7. Unlike Iraq, Japan actually attacked the U.S.
Something I think Karl Rove forgot to tell Bush before he gave him the latest slogan to travel the country with.
