the first whiff of "we're gonna bomb the bejeezus out of F* Saddam" came with bush's efforts in early 2002, which ran from "Saddam is a bad man. He gassed his own people" to "He's clearly hiding something. It's up to him to prove he isn't hiding weapons of mass destruction."
As summer progressed it was starting to look like the world just wasn't going to go along with a war for such a pathetic reason. So, someone snuck the yellowcake crap back into a NIE in the fall of 2002, and the administration and its echo chamber started the new and successful campaign that they knew (but couldn't tell us) that Saddam had nuclear weapons. (Reason 2)
As the war progressed and WMDs were not found, Bush first just lied and claimed weapons had been found. When even this could no longer fly, they started to go to the idea that he had a weapons "program."
Seems there were several incarnations of this.
Next, IIRC, came bringing them democracy... or, freedom was on the march?" I don't know much after this point because I stopped listening.
Seems at last look we're downsized to saying democracy doesn't depend on women's rights... it was ALL WORTH IT, though. If Chalabi winds up winning the whole thing, I'm going to be sick.
